Jane Key Wilson passed away peacefully at her home in South Orleans, MA on Friday, May 10, 2013.
Janie is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Frederick (Rick) Wilson of South Orleans, MA, her three children, Cindy Wilson of Chicago, IL, Peggy Hersam and her husband Andrew of Darien, CT and Woody Wilson and his wife Kim of Frederick, MD. Janie is also survived by her sister Dorothy Key Thompson and her husband Jodie of Dallas, TX and five grandchildren: Maggie, Tucker, Annie, Jack and Charlotte. Janie was predeceased by brothers Homer Key of Tyler, TX and Robert Key of Shreveport, LA.
Born May 27, 1934 in Sapulpa, OK to Althea and Homer Key, Janie grew up in Tyler and Dallas, TX. She was a graduate of the Hockaday School in Dallas, TX and attended Hollins College in Roanoke, VA, and the University of Texas in Austin. After marrying Rick in 1958, she and Rick lived in Baltimore, MD and Bronxville, NY before settling in Darien, CT in 1961. Their three children were born in Darien, where Janie was a member of Noroton Presbyterian Church, the Noroton Yacht Club and the Junior League. In 1974, her family moved to Hagerstown, MD, where Janie was a member of the Fountain Head Country Club, Hagerstown Garden Club, Maryland Symphony Guild and the Valley Art Association. They then moved full time to their home in South Orleans, MA on Cape Cod where Rick eventually retired and Janie became an award-winning member of the Nauset Garden Club, an active member of the League Club of Cape Cod and the Federated Church of Orleans. She was a prolific painter and particularly loved to paint distinct images of the Cape and its natural habitat. She loved to garden, play golf, spend time with friends and family and cheer on her beloved Boston Red Sox. Janie and Rick traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Caribbean, Canada and even reached Cape Horn. She was also her husband's first mate on countless sailing excursions on the Chesapeake, Long Island Sound and the Virgin Islands.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday, May 16 at the Federated Church of Orleans, MA followed by a reception at the Orleans Yacht Club. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to the Federated Church of Orleans, 162 Main Street, East Orleans, MA 02643 or the Snow Library, 67 Main Street, Orleans, MA 02653.
