Janice ("Jan") Allen Pearce, 76, of New Bern, died peacefully May 14, 2014, at Wilson Medical Center.
Beloved wife and mother, Jan had a career that spanned several years and was the source of many close and lasting friendships. Early on, Jan was a buyer for Hudson Belk in Havelock, after which she became a renowned substitute school teacher at Havelock High School. There she earned not only the love and respect of her students and colleagues, but also the special title, Sgt. Pearce. Finally, Jan spent several happy years working at the Craven-Carteret Electric Membership Co-op before she retired to spend her leisure time, much of it at Emerald Isle, with the love of her life, Pat, their close "beach friends," and her family.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Havelock, where she particularly enjoyed the supportive fellowship of her Sisters in the Fidelis Sisters' Sunday School Class.
Jan is preceded in death by her husband of almost 59 years, Patrick Pearce, and her daughter in-law, Deborah Pearce.
She is survived by her two sons, Patrick R. "Randy" Pearce of Wilson, and Richard A. "Rick" Pearce of Raleigh; her daughter, Renee Zukerman, and husband David of Wilmington; brother, Gary Robinette, of Thomasville; sister, Patricia Phillips, of Thomasville; her grandchildren, Dawn P. Etheridge, Tommy W. Pearce, Lily Zukerman and Abel Zukerman; her great-grandchildren, Madison A. Etheridge, Tyler Pearce and Kaleb Pearce; and a special nephew, Charles Corridori of Arizona.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 18, 2014 at 3:00 pm at Cotten Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service. Burial, at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, will take place on Monday, May 19, 2014 at 2:00 pm.
Flowers are accepted or memorial donations may be made to: First Baptist Church of Havelock 111 Hollywood Blvd., Havelock, NC 28532.
