I was a nursing student at Downstate from 1975-1977 and was a very close friend. Jay was the only one in our coed dorm with a color TV. Every evening , five or six nursing students would traipse up to his apartment in our bathrobes to watch "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" at 11PM. Upon observing us one evening, a male neighbor said "Wow , Jay must be doing something right!" He was an exceptional human being and a wonderful host. We had so much fun with him! I was checking on various friends from Downstate when I came across his obituary. My deepest sympathy. I can't imagine your sorrow. He was unique.

My Prayers are with you.... this poem helped me get thru my loss, I hope it can bring ysome comfort:
Death is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away to the next room.
I am I and you are you.
Whatever we were to each other,
That, we still are.
Call me by my old familiar name.
Speak to me in the easy way
which you always used.
Put no difference into your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.
Laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me. Pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word
that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effect.
Without the trace of a shadow on it.
Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same that it ever was.
There is absolute unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind
because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you.
For an interval.
Somewhere. Very near.
Just around the corner.
All is well.
Nothing is past; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before only better, infinitely happier and forever we will all be one together with God.

To my mentor, physician and most importantly- friend. You impacted my life more than you know. You were someone who could be counted in to give the best advice which always came from your heart- which was as big as your laugh and love for your family who meant everything to you. You touched many people's lives in deep and meaningful ways and will be missed by many. I have a hole in my heart and will always remember you fondly.
My sympathies to you and your family.

A ship sails and I stand watching
until it fades on the horizon,
and someone says " he is gone"
Gone where?
Gone from my sight that is all,
he is just as large as when I saw him
the diminished size,
and loss of sight of him is within me,
not in him
and just at that moment when
someone says "he is gone"
There are voices elsewhere shouting
"Here he comes!"
... and that is dying.
May this comfort you in your time of great sadness.
