COLUMBIA Graveside service for Jean Barbie Smith, 92, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, April 3, 2015, in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
Mrs. Smith died Monday, March 30, 2015. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late Thaddeus Fulton and Kate Brown Barbie. She graduated from Hartsville High School and attended Coker College. She was a kind, accepting and supportive person who believed in the dreams of her family and wanted everyone she met to be happy. She loved to clean, sew, and loved fashionable clothing, particularly red. She loved to cook and savored good desserts, always asking if her family wanted chocolate. She loved her husband who died eight years ago and they even had a cute love at first sight story. She was the hope that there was still good in the world and made everything she touched beautiful. We love her and miss her. She and her husband were members of Shandon UMC for over thirty years. As an Air Force wife she was an excellent hostess for many military functions and parties and welcomed anyone into her home.
Surviving are her daughters, Stephanie S. Whitman (John) of Plover, WI, Linda S. Gates (Larry) of Conway, Barbie S. Mathis of Columbia; grandchildren, Faith Mathis of Columbia, Paul Bullis (Paula) of Slinger, WI, Eddie Gates (Yukiko) of Tokyo, Japan, Terry Bullis of Stevens Point, WI; seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Frances Jerman of Camden; many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Vander Lee Smith; granddaughter, Marie Gates; four sisters and one brother.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 140 Stoneridge Drive, Suite 210, Columbia, SC 29210 or Harvest
