Jean Murray Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 27, 2015.

Jean Murray, of Vancouver, WA, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2015 at the age of 103, surrounded by her loving family.

Jean was born on January 31, 1912 in Fessenden, ND to parents Even Tweten, who had emigrated from Norway, and Beata (Stoa) Tweten. Jean had 5 brothers and 4 sisters. With two sisters previously moved to the Pacific Northwest, one in Spokane, and one in Olympia, Jean and her sister Bea also decided to leave the prairies of ND and took a train to Vancouver in 1937. Jean immediately gained a job as a live in house maid for U.S. Army Colonel Baumeister and his family on Officer's Row in the Vancouver Barracks. She loved doing that for five years and often commented how they treated her as another member of the family.

With her fiancé, Glenn Murray, whom she met in Vancouver, in the Air Force and stationed in Southern California, Jean took a train to join him, and they were married in Yuma, AZ in May 1942. They returned to Vancouver and had two sons, Gerald (Gerry) and Larry. She and Glenn enjoyed a loving marriage for 55 years, until he passed away in 1997.

Jean thoroughly enjoyed being a stay at home mom, and loved to cook for the family, tend her garden, and loved watching her favorite sports teams, the Seattle Mariners and Seattle Seahawks on TV.

Her love of cooking extended to when she was 100 years old, wherein she still cooked Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas dinner for the family! Jean also had a gift of playing the piano, which she learned to play "by ear" as a young girl. She couldn't read a note, but could expertly play any song she heard on the radio or TV. She skillfully played Happy Birthday to herself on her 100th birthday.

Jean is survived by sons Gerry (wife Monica) of Vancouver, Larry (wife Erna) of Vancouver, and her very beloved grandson Sean, of Vancouver.

Special thanks to Maggie and her family at Noble Adult Family Home for their loving care of mom these last two years.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 1, at 11am, at Vancouver Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Park Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please give a loved one an extra big hug.

I met Mrs. Murray in 1960 and for the next 54 years she treated me with respect and was always kind, gracious, and the perfect example of how you are suppose to treat people. Whenever I saw her, she had a smile, a kind word, and asked about my family. She was an incredible wife, mother, and friend. She will be missed and always loved.
