Jean Medford Aiton, 64, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014 at Gadsden Regional Medical Center.Mr. Aiton is survived by his daughter, Tracy Aiton Ballard (Ted Ballard) of Westcliffe, Colo.; and son, Jean Ray Aiton (Emile Gilbreath Aiton) of Double Springs; and three grandchildren, Hailey L. Aiton, Hunter R. Aiton of Double Springs, and Madeline M. Ballard of Westcliffe, Colo. Mr. Aiton grew up in Fort Wayne, Ind. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jean Harry Aiton and Edna Stoll Aiton; and a sister, Diane Aiton Richards. He is also survived by his brother, Steven M. Aiton, Hunter R. Aiton of Double Springs, and Madeline M. Ballard of Westcliffe, Colo. Mr. Aiton grew up in Fort Wayne, Ind. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jean Harry Aiton and Edna Stoll Aiton; and a sister, Diane Aiton Richards. He is also survived by his brother, Steven M. Aiton (Barbara) of New Haven, Ind.; and his sister, Roxanne Aiton Moore (Mark) of Fort Wayne, Ind. Mr. Aiton is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.Jean Medford Aiton was a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he earned several medals, including the Silver Star and two Bronze Stars. He was involved in seven campaigns during the war. He was also awarded the Purple Heart. Jean was a Sergeant in the United States Army. He was a member of the Fourth Infantry, Tenth Calvary, and trained with the 101st Airborne. The arrangements have been prepared by Collier–Butler Funeral Home in Gadsden. A private graveside service will be held Monday at 2:45 p.m. at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, where he will receive full military honors.
