STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Longtime Staten Islander Giovannina (Jean) DeRenzi, 94, of Richmond, a retired medical secretary who was the matriarch of three generations, died Thursday in Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton.

Born Giovannina Andreano in Giovinazzo, Italy, her family immigrated to Manhattan in 1920 and later moved to West Brighton. She lived in Indiana during World War II to be near her husband, Pasquale, who was training there. The couple lived in Port Richmond, and in 1959 moved to New Dorp. In 2010, Mrs. DeRenzi, moved to Richmond to live with her son, Dominick.

Mrs. DeRenzi worked for 27 years as a medical secretary at the former Merchant Marine Hospital, Clifton.

Mrs. DeRenzi loved a specific brand of coffee. She would make weekly shopping trips to Macy's in Manhattan to keep herself supplied with the special brew.

In her leisure time, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting and attending Broadway plays. She was also a fabulous cook, said her family. Her table was open to all and she relished having family and friends around her. She was also an avid New York Yankees fan, and was in attendance on opening day of the team's new stadium.

She was a parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Peace R.C. Church, New Dorp.

Her husband of 56 years, Pasquale, died in 2001.

Along with her son, Dominick, surviving are three grandchildren and five great granddaughters.

The funeral will be Saturday from the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton.
