Jean Worth Owen 1923 - 2013

Jean Worth Owen, born October 8, 1923, passed away peacefully January 2, 2013, at TMH in Tallahassee, Florida at the age of 89, after living a full and varied life.

He was a native of Tallahassee who received his JD degree from University of Florida where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He served his country in the Marine Corps and at one time was the Commander of the Tallahassee Marine Corps Tank Unit and retired with the rank of Colonel. He was a member of the Florida Bar Association for 50 years and had a private law practice, was Small Claims Courts Judge for Leon County and worked with the US Attorney General's Office as well as the Florida State Attorney General's Office and the Florida Department of Transportation. He was an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the Baltimore, MD office. He taught law enforcement classes at FSU training many officers. He was a staunch believer in giving to his community and served on the Board of Directors of the fledgling Junior Museum, now the Tallahassee Museum and on the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army. He volunteered at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital for 5 years where his delivery of camellias was appreciated by staff and patients alike; and he served as a Volunteer Mediator with the Leon County Courts for 20 years where he received the Volunteer of the Year Award for his work with them.

He was devout in his love of the Lord and cared deeply for his family, his faith family at Holy Cross Anglican Church and his many friends thru out the community.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lourena Owen and a large family of loved ones. This includes his five children, Isabel Owen, John Owen (Linda) of Tallahassee, FL, Thomas (Tommy) Owen of Sopchoppy, FL, Ronald Owen (Amber) of Dallas, TX, and Linda Douglas (Bill) of Riverview, FL. It also includes three step children, Kathleen Cartledge (Phillip) of Tallahassee, FL Janet Outlaw (Cecil) of Murfreesboro, TN and Watson Frawley (Rebecca) of Ashville, NC; as well as 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; and a sister, Jayne Selby of Corpus Christi, TX.

Jean was preceded in death by his father, BJ Owen, Rachel Matheny Owen, his mother; and his brother, Theron Owen.

In keeping with his life of giving to his community, in lieu of flowers, wishes are that donations be made to Grace Mission and Holy Cross Anglican Church. Memorial Services will be held on Saturday (January12,2013) at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Angelican Church, 4859 Kerry Forest Parkway.

Please do not tell any of the other mediators, but Jean Worth Owen was always my favorite fellow mediator (in Leon County Small Claims Court--where I met Jean and bunch of really nice people). Jean was the one of our colleagues who I would want as my mediator if I ever had a case.

Jean also "changed my life" in a small but real way, the value of which is incalculable. Jean was also a volunteer at the hospital. One day as we left the men's room at the same time he used a paper towel to open the door. I had seen the surveys of how few men wash their hands... Using the paper towel was obvious--until all bathroom doors open by pushing out. I like to think that I have not touched an inside bathroom door knob since then. Thanks, Jean.

And there was so much more to Jean Worth Owen, a remarkable human being.

My grandfather was one of the finest men I have ever known. He was the same person from the earliest day I can remember him until the last day I saw him at Thanksgiving. You always knew were Papa stood! I can remember telling him on the phone when he was in the hospital and he was doing things his way in Sept that the CSM tells the COL what to do and replied instantly with "No the COL tells the CSM what to do" That was Papa. I regret not telling him enough how impressed I was with him, how much I loved him and how I bragged to everyone that my grathfather was a COL in the USMC, not to mention a FBI agent. He was the kind of grandfather that every young boy would want. He taught me toughness, to never be afraid and never back down. He was always there even when I was unsure of the "way around the block in Gulf Breeze" Papa could of lived to be a 1000 and it would not have been enough time. One of the most impressive things about him was his love for "Granny Lou" I hope when Leslie and I are that age we can demonstrate that kind of devotion. We LOVE YOU Granny Lou and I will miss you papa, but your memory will always be in my heart; and if Heaven is not in order when you get there I know it will be in short order. Love You Kenny

Papa,

You were such an awesome Grandfather and I was so fortunate to have you in my life for as long as I did. You will be missed terribly. I am just so glad that I have such wonderful memories... crabbing, making pizzas, dominos, bike riding, attending a mediation with you, so many countless family gatherings, and so many more memories. I love you so much but know that the Lord will take good care of you. Love you Papa!

I remember Colonel Owen when he was at FDOT. He was always a fine, gentle man, but still had the demeanor of a Marine. It was really nice to know him.
