Jeanne Neideck Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 3, 2016.

Jeanne Elizabeth Sherman Neideck died peacefully at Paoli Hospital surrounded by her loved ones on Saturday, October 29, 2016.
Born during President Calvin Coolidge's administration on April 30, 1926 to Harry Sherman Sr. and Bessie McKenzie of East Orange , NJ, Jeanne attended Clifford J Scott High School, graduating in 1943 after skipping the 6th grade, of which she was very proud.
She graduated from Skidmore College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1947. During her nursing training at Skidmore she took part of her clinical training at Johns Hopkins University in the Obstetrics Department. After returning to Skidmore, she wrote an impassioned letter to the President of the College recommending they discontinue the association with Johns Hopkins because of the callousness she witnessed there from some doctors towards their minority patients. Skidmore subsequently moved the program to a different hospital.
Jeanne graduated from Yale University School of Nursing in 1961 with a Masters in Nursing and as a Certified Nurse Midwife. For many years she worked as a visiting nurse and as head of the Labor and Delivery unit at Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. While at Weill Cornell Jeanne was head nurse when Jacqueline Kennedy gave birth there to Caroline Kennedy.
Also during that time, Jeanne was a member of the Dessoff Choir, a leading independent choral group based in New York City, performing many works of classical music, and even soloing at Carnegie Hall.
In 1965 Jeanne married William F. Neideck (1927-1998). Together they moved to Pittsford, New York where their daughter Nancy was born. During her 30 years there Jeanne taught nursing at the University of Rochester, was a substitute school nurse, volunteered at school and church and frequently enjoyed playing duplicate bridge.
In 1992 Jeanne and Bill purchased a home on beautiful Sanibel Island, Florida. They spent every winter there playing golf, going to the early-bird, hosting friends and family and not shoveling snow.
From 1995-present, when she wasn't on Sanibel, Jeanne joined her daughter Nancy and family in Pennsylvania.
Throughout her life, Jeanne enjoyed laughing for the sake of laughing, being with her family, playing the piano, discussing politics, traveling the world, oriental décor, sitting in the sun, sipping Old Fashioneds (always muddled), reading The New York Times every day, eating Brie and crackers and avoiding snow.
Jeanne had hoped to see the outcome of the 2016 Presidential election, though she did vote early. Her friends and family have no doubt for whom her vote was cast.
She disliked football, cats, broccoli and people who like to hear themselves talk, in that order.

Jeanne is survived by her daughter Nancy Christ, son-in-law Geoff Christ, two adored grandchildren Melanie and William; nieces Catherine Sherman and Susan Sherman who fondly remember Jeanne during annual vacations to Cape Cod, and nephew William Sherman who remembers Jeanne driving around New York City in her bright yellow Plymouth convertible. All of who gave her great joy in her 90 years of living. When asked, Jeanne would say she lived a marvelous life.

A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Glenmoore, PA on Saturday, November 19th, 2016 at 2:00pm. Burial will be held at a later time at The National Cemetery at Indiantown Gap, Annville, PA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Yale University School of Nursing, P.O. Box 27399, West Haven, CT 06516
