Jennifer Wadge Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 4, 2016.

Jennifer died suddenly on December 29th, 2015 in her home. A vibrant young woman, she was only 39 years old. During her much too short life, her sparkling, caring personality touched so many lives. As an educator and union leader she worked tirelessly on behalf of others, but her greatest legacy will be her devotion to the cause of improving the working and learning conditions in Surrey schools.

Born in Winnipeg on March 11, 1976, Jennifer moved with her family to Surrey as a young child. She graduated with honours from Semiahmoo Secondary and went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree at Simon Fraser University. From there she earned her Education certificate at UBC. She was hired by the Surrey School district where she taught at Crescent Park, Bear Creek, and Laronde Elementary schools. She served as Staff Representative in each school, and was elected as a Member-at-Large on the Surrey Teachers' Association Executive. In 2010, Jennifer became a full time officer at the STA after she was elected as Second Vice President. In 2011, she became First Vice President, and since 2012 she has served as the STA President.

While a classroom teacher, Jennifer worked to bring the latest teaching innovations and programs to her students, incorporating current technology in her lessons. Besides this, she was a constant advocate for the special needs students she taught and pursued courses which qualified her to be a Learning Support teacher. Students and teachers will remember the exuberance and joy that came from Ms. Wadge's classroom.

When Jennifer began working full time for the STA, she was able devote her efforts toward supporting members and advocating for improved learning conditions in our schools. She had a close working relationship with the Surrey School Board administrators, as well as the provincial wing of the teachers' union, the BCTF. She was as concerned about the many individual teachers she helped in their time of difficulty as she was with the need for increased school funding and supports for special needs students.

In her personal life, Jennifer had strong family ties. She leaves behind her mother, Connie Wadge, a retired Surrey teacher, and her father, John Wadge, teacher and recently retired as a Field Officer at the BCTF. He is also a past president of the STA. Jennifer has two sisters, Erin and Pamela, Pam's husband Chris Carrier and their 2 year old son, Benjamin. Little Benji adored playing with his Auntie Jenny. There are no words to express how much she will be missed.

A Celebration of Jennifer's Life will be held at 4:00 pm on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at Victory Memorial Park Funeral Centre, 14831 - 28 Ave., Surrey, BC.

I was shocked and saddened to hear about Jennifer's passing. She was my neighbor in Morgan Crossing and we often chatted while our dogs visited outside. She loved that little dog whom I'm sure will be missing her along with all of her family. My condolences to her family. She was a lovely woman.

Lara and I were very saddened to hear of Jennifer's passing. Although we hadn't seen or spoken to her in many years, we remember a lovely young girl from Sunnyside Elementary. She and Lara did a beginning Science project together and Jennifer also came to some of Lara's birthday parties. Her beaming face was always present it seemed and I think this indicated her happiness for life. Our condolences to Connie, John and family. May Jennifer rest in peace.
Sincerely, Helen Smith and Lara Lopes.

Jen conducted meetings with passion and conviction, but always with a ready smile and a touch of humour - very reminiscent of how her father John led the STA when he was president. She was definitely a chip off the old block, and inconceivable that she is gone.

Jennifer was in my grade six class in Winnipeg. We attended Girl Guides together. I recall playing at her house on Lanark Bay when her family lived in Winnipeg. This was many years ago. I heard about her death through another school friend. I can appreciate and respect the difference that Jennifer made for BC students and educators. May she rest in peace. My condolences to Connie, John, Erin and Pamela Wadge.

Jennifer brought her wonderful skills to education and to leadership, and was so appreciated by all who knew her. I remember her first as a bright, friendly, interested grade 4 student at Sunnyside Elementary. That such a talented, ethical person has left us all, leaves such a gap for everyone who knew her.

As I read all these messages I am at once very proud and very sad as Jennifer is my dear niece and the first of the Wadge grandchildren. What a strong, wonderful young woman she became, combining two valuable qualities, a sense of fairness and a sense of humour. All our love from the Winnipeg Wadge/Thomson family.

Jennifer was a kind, caring and compassionate educator who was a strong advocate for public education. I got to know Jennifer over the years at the teachers association office. She always took time to answer a question or share a laugh or two. She was a strong advocate for teachers and supported us even more then she realized. I have since moved to Winnipeg and am able to share the skills, with confidence, to my colleagues out here. I will miss her "voice" in the Monday memo, her smile on the newsletters, and her unwaverly support for public education.
To the Wadge family, my thoughts are with you and I offer my sincere condolences. Jennifer is a true inspiration to many educators. She gave us a voice and also the skills to speak loudly and confidently on matters of great importance. Her smile and kind heart will always be remembered.

Jennifer made such a significant impact in her life. For me, this was reflected in her tireless work with the STA throughout the recent teacher's strike. When I think of Jen, I see a brilliant and wise person. She was fun loving and yet a serious and courageous leader of the largest teacher local in the province. She was a caring and understanding friend to those who needed someone to hear their concerns.
She has left a legacy that will ensure that she continues to be a source of wisdom for those she has left behind. I see the STA executive, when stuck on an issue, asking themselves, "what would Jen have done."
John and Connie, my deepest condolences. You raised an amazing daughter with a beautiful spirit. She was clearly loved and will be missed by so many.

Jennifer was such a warm, kind and thoughtful person. I worked with Jen on the STA executive committee for two and a half years. She was so welcoming to me and allowed me to find my own place on the committee in my own time. Jen encouraged me, supported me and she inspired me. She joked with me and she teased me a lot because she just had that amazing sense of humour. Jennifer was truly a professional who always kept a level head and was the voice of reason. She always put her members first. She accomplished so much in her short life. I don't think anyone can know the incredible impact that Jen had on me and so many other people around the province. She was a teacher, an activist, fearless, a leader and a friend. Jennifer was a beautiful person, with a beautiful soul. I am blessed to have known her.

A personality that could fill a stadium, and even a bigger heart. Jennifer's greatest gift was what she brought out in others. No matter how tough a situation, she'd somehow, always make you believe you wouldn't just get through it, but that you would be better for it in the end. She was perfectly articulate, could cut through a complicated issue in a heartbeat, and never hesitated to fight for what was right and just, no matter how difficult the path. She simply brought out the best in those around her. Her laugh was infectious, her smile lit up any space she occupied. I will miss her so much. My deepest condolences to her family. I don't think there are words to express such a loss.

Jennifer and I met through our advocacy for our teaching colleagues. She has been a fearless and compassionate voice for teachers and (most importantly) students in Surrey and across British Columbia. My heart goes out to her family and close friends for this unspeakable loss.

January 5, 2016

Mary Loblaw

Jennifer's parents can remember her with tremendous pride. She followed her dad's footsteps, as president of the STA, in encouraging teachers to be knowledgeable and active in supporting public education and their profession. Jennifer did this very, very effectively, winning friendships and support not just in Surrey, but throughout the BCTF. I rather suspect that the friendships went a long way from ending there. Her students' parents, other co-workers and people who met and worked with her could not help but like Jennifer for her positive attitude, sense of humour, and kindness. During the AGM last year, Jennifer exemplified graciousness. She has been inspiration to us, and we will sure miss her.

Though words are not enough in such time of grief I want the Wadge family to know what a positive impact Jen had on so many of her colleagues in recent years. Know that Jen's words on many occasions brought teachers together in difficult times; she was always there on the front lines fighting passionately for us. Her incredible wisdom, insight, zeal and humour will be remembered. Jen made a difference for many in her young life and my heart goes out to the Wadge family.

January 5, 2016

Even though I only knew Jennifer through her motivational speaking when trying to keep the spirits' of teachers up during our last strike, her passing has definitely moved me. She had so much more passion to give, and why she left so soon, no one will know, but her memories will stay with us for a lifetime! Thank you, Jennifer, for all that you did for the teachers of Surrey! May you rest in peace! Thank you to the Wadge family for sharing your beautiful daughter/sister/aunt with us! I hope you find some comfort in knowing how many lives she touched! Cherish the memories!

I had the privilege of being working with Jennifer as an STA Rep. and attending some of her knowledgeable training seminars. When working with her, you always felt "listened to" and accepted even if your views differed. She was an inspiration. Her optimism always buoyed me up when I was down. She will be sincerely missed by so many she has helped over the years.

My sympathies to John and Connie. I remember a number of times when John and I have had the opportunity to speak about matters at the STA. At this time of mourning, please know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

There are few tragedies in life that provoke greater anguish than an early death. Death is always in the face of those who are old; but in the young like Jennifer, death sneaks up behind one's back and shocks us all. Jennifer accomplished so much and made a such a significant difference in public education and our union that this early loss is all the more grievously felt.

To the Wadge family, I am praying for friends to comfort you, faith to uphold you, and loving memories of Jenn to help you smile again.

Jenn was a friend, a mentor, and a colleague she was all those things and more. She was kind, considerate, and compassionate. She was also mischievous and hilarious. Her smile would light up any room and her laugh would echo in your ears. Thank you for your friendship - I will miss you sincerely.

Jenn was a passionate advocate and leader, a pillar of strength for Surrey Teachers Association. Thank you for your actions inspired others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you were indeed a born leader. We will not forget you!

What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget.

Many hugs to all those grieving Jenn's loss you are in my thoughts. Our collective hearts are indeed heavy with sympathy.

Wherever you are you will always be in my heart. Mahatma Gandhi

My heart goes out to Jennifer's family and friends at this most difficult time.

I always admired her strength and passion in supporting teachers, students and the entire public education system. She was wise beyond her years and it is shocking to hear that she is gone. The BCTF has lost a powerful, young voice but I am sure her example will inspire teacher activists both in Surrey and throughout the province.

The Roman philosopher, Cicero once said, "The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living." I have no doubt that Jennifer will live on in us for a very long time.

I was so saddened to hear of such a bright light's sudden passing. I feel that as a union leader, Jennifer represented our concerns very well. I am grateful that I did have the opportunity to thank Jennifer in person last year for her wise words, hard work, and sound leadership during the last round of negotiations. I was impressed with her ability to motivate, educate, and communicate. She made a difference in our world on many levels. My heart goes out to her parents. As a mother who lost a child myself, I am deeply aware of just how difficult this loss is to her family. Peace and love to all her friends, loved ones, and supporters.
