Remembering Jin Hyok Kim

Jin Hyok Kim was born on August 15th, 1941 in Kumchon, South Korea. He came from a large family, one of seven children. He had four sisters and two brothers. He served in the Korean military as a young man, then started his own business as a hardware store owner. He was married to Nyo Hyong Kim for 28 years, until her passing in 1995, with whom he had three children. He has two sons, Tae Sung Kim and Tae Ho Kim, as well as a daughter, Mi Hyon (Kim) Haas.

Jin Hyok Kim, with his wife and three children, came to the United States in 1975 with the purpose of trying to provide a better life for his children. He came to this country with nearly nothing and worked hard to provide for his family, and did so successfully, by humbly taking any job he could get at first, then learning the skills needed to be a painter, which was his vocation for most of his life. Along the way, he's made many friends and also served as the President of the Korean Chamber of Commerce for two years.

He enjoyed fishing, eating sushi, working in his garden, and playing with his grandchildren, Nathan, Tyler, and Logan. He also had an artistic interest in wood carving and was very good at building and repairing things. He also liked to refinish antique wood furniture in his spare time. Above all else, he was the happiest when spending time with his grandchildren. He was so patient, loving, and fun with them and they all loved being with him so much. He has three grandsons and was very much looking forward to being the proud Grandfather of a fourth grandchild. His daughter, Mi Hyon, is currently pregnant and is due to deliver a baby girl on April 14.

Jin Hyok lived the last 13 years of his life with his companion, Sun Nam Kwon. He was a family man and an extremely hard worker who did all he could to provide a better life for his children than the one he had. That was the driving force in how he lived his life. He will be dearly missed but will live on through his three children and four grandchildren.
