A native of Austin, Texas, Jo Carol found her voice at an early age. Born to Hollis and Mildred Moffett, she was the third of six children. In her youth, Jo Carol attended schools in the Austin Independent School District, and was a very proud graduate of "Old" L.C. Anderson High School. From there, she went on to attend Central Texas College.
Throughout the course of her life, Jo Carol had many accomplishments, achievements and recognitions. She was a dedicated employee of the Employee's Retirement System of Texas for 20 years, and later worked for Empowerment Options, where she was a Foster Care Provider for women with disabilities.
However, beyond her professional work, Jo Carol was known to most for her beautifully powerful voice, and her ability to minister to the masses through her God-given gift of song. At an early age, she discovered music, and the power it had to draw those who heard her nearer to Christ. Jo Carol was a member of the Jimmy Butler Singers- the first local black Sunday morning program on television (aired on KTBC- now Fox 7).
A faithful and dedicated member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Austin, Jo Carol participated in a number of ministries within her church, as well as within the St. John District, and the State and National Baptist Conventions.
As a soloist, she sang at a number of events, including the Inaugural Prayer Service for Governor Anne Richards, the Texas Legislative Black Caucus, and the National Evangelical Conference. In 1986, she made her first television appearance as a vocalist in the movie "The Lone Star Kid", starring James Earl Jones.
Despite all of her successes, there was no accomplishment greater to her than her son, Sedrick Moffett (of Atlanta, Georgia). She treasured him as a gift from God, and the mention of his name would always bring about the biggest smile.
Jo Carol believed to whom much is given, much is required, and thanked God daily for her gifts. She also believed that in all we do, God must be GLORIFIED, the church EDIFIED, and Jesus' love MAGNIFIED. She believed that one way to touch lives is through the medium of music.
She is preceded in death by her father, Hollis Moffett and her sister, Jean Loretta Moffett-Dendy. She is survived by a loving son, Sedrick Moffett and his wife Linda of Atlanta, Georgia; mother, Mildred Moffett ; one sister, Sharon Washington (Herman); three brothers, Hollis Ray Moffett (Lee), Harry Moffett and Harrell Moffett (Martha); and brother-in-law Henry Dendy, all of Austin, Texas; four nieces and four nephews; seven great nieces and five great nephews, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from seven o'clock in the evening until half past eight o'clock in the evening on Monday, the 19th of September at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Home, 2938 E. 13th Street, Austin TX. Funeral Services will be held at half past ten o'clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 20th of September at St. John's Tabernacle; 7501 Blessing Avenue, Austin TX. Interment will follow funeral services at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery; 14501 North IH-35, Pflugerville TX.
