MATTHEWS, Joan Hickman
Passed away peacefully at Wynfield Retirement Community on November 25th, 2017 after a courageous battle with several health challenges. The daughter of Ada and John Matthews of Oshawa, Joan was predeceased by sister Lois Brandt (Robert) and brother John Matthews (Doreen). She was the cherished aunt of Nancy and Chris Brandt of Oshawa and Robert (Barb) and David (Cory) Matthews of Brooklin. Joan was the loving great aunt of Russell, Melissa, Sarah, Megan and Katie Matthews. Joan retired from General Motors in the late 1980s, at which time she was drawn to helping others through a commitment to volunteerism that lasted throughout her life. She was an avid pianist, teaching local adults and children to play the piano, as well as visiting local retirement homes on a regular basis to entertain the residents. Joan was an active and valued member of the St Georges Anglican Church's St Bede's Group, providing help and assistance to those in need. In 2013 Joan moved into Wynfield Retirement Community. She will be remembered by all of her friends there, happily participating in Wynfield events or playing the piano for a group sing along. The family would like to thank the staff of Wynfield Retirement Community for their care and compassion during Joan's stay. Visitation will be held at OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West (905-721-1234) on Tuesday November 28th from 6 – 8 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at ST. GEORGE'S ANGLICAN CHURCH (51 Centre Street, Oshawa) on Wednesday, November 29th at 1:00 p.m. with visitation 1 hour prior at the church. Memorial donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
