Obituary

Curiously, this story begins with a boy named Bill Thomas. His sixth birthday was approaching, although there were usually no presents for birthdays, this year, his parents told him that he was going to get a wonderful gift. His birthday came and went with no further mention of it. Finally, ten days later, his mom and dad left the house, assuring him they would return with his gift. They arrived home with something wrapped in a pink blanket. His wonderful gift was a baby sister. She wasn't what he really wanted, but he figured, she was better than nothing at all. Joan Beatrice Thomas was born March 26, 1935, the youngest of five children. Named Beatrice after her mother's twin sister and JoAnn (which was misspelled as Joan on her birth certificate), by her big sister Jacqueline, who named her little sister after a girl that she thought was smart, beautiful and a good dresser. The name fit perfectly. Jo had beauty, intelligence and a love for fashion that had her closets and dressers bursting with clothes. She also had a great love and respect for all animals and was a strong advocate against animal abuse. She loved, cared for, and spoiled a menagerie of pets throughout her lifetime.

While in her teens, she developed a crush on her brother Dick's friend, and told her friends that she would marry him someday. That day arrived and she became Mrs. Howard Morgan on June 20, 1953. Jo and Howard had four children, twin sons Danny and Dennis, and daughters Denise and DeAnna. Howard and Jo were married almost 37 years before cancer took him from her. In time, she found love again with Otto Salzer, and enjoyed eight years of her life with him, until cancer also took him. In later years cancer took both her daughter Denise and her son Dennis.

After surviving her own bout with cancer, glaucoma (which stole 75 percent of her sight), a stroke and a few mild heart attacks; Jo died in her sleep on July 6, 2014 at the age of 79.

This was a very brief history of my mom's life. It was based on fact and on the stories told to me by her – stories I wish she could go on telling me forever.
