Joe David Bellamy of Sanford, FL passed away suddenly on August 5, 2014. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on December 29, 1941. He attended Duke University, Antioch College, and the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop. His novel, Green Freedom, was recently published by Narrative Library. Joe won the Editors' Book Award for his novel, Suzi Sinzinnati, and his collection of short fiction, Atomic Love, was an AWP Award Series Selection. He is also author or editor of sixteen other books.

Joe was the founding editor and publisher of Fiction International magazine and press. A former president of both the Associated Writing Programs (AWP) and the Coordinating Council of Literary Magazines (CCLM), he served as Director of the Literature Program of the National Endowment for the Arts in the early 90s. He has been a member of the National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) since 1980 and served as a member of the NBCC Board of Directors from 2001 to 2004.

His articles, fiction, poetry, and reviews have been published in: The Atlantic, The Nation, Harper's, Paris Review, Narrative, The New York Times Book Review, Ploughshares, Partisan Review, Story, North American Review, The Washington Post Book World, and some seventy others.

He has taught at several colleges and universities, including the University of Iowa, Virginia Wesleyan College, St. Lawrence University, and George Mason University and was Whichard Distinguished Professor in the Humanities at East Carolina University. His literary papers are archived at the Beinecke Library at Yale University.

Joe had a passion for writing and running and was very accomplished in both areas. He also had a great love for his family and for dogs. He was a wonderful man who was full of life. On his last day, he said, “I had a great run.” He was referring to his run around the neighborhood. However, this phrase can also be attributed to his life. He is survived by: the love of his life, Connie Bellamy; daughter, Lael Bellamy (Rich Barnard); his son, Sam Bellamy (Kristen Bellamy); grandchildren, Thomas Foster Barnard, Harrison Barnard, Elise Bellamy, Abby Bellamy; aunt, Dorothy Zutavern; and his four-legged companion, Tristan. He had a wonderful spirit that will be remembered by all.

The End of the Marathon

Here I come now

this feast of oxygen

the end of the marathon

the stadium in full view now

down the gravel runway

supporting the sun like an orange umbrella

the flags waving from its parapets

the TV dollies panning with me

the grinning cameramen

and the roar is starting, buoyant, incredible

all my blood is in my heart and limbs and lungs

my body rides free on a stream of blue air

at this speed

there is no strain to speak of

I stand still

and the earth moves

past me

Joe David Bellamy
