Joe Tom Mullins (1924 - 2014)

Joe Tom Mullins, 89, passed peacefully into the presence of Jesus on Saturday, March 1, 2014. He was born near Whitesburg, Kentucky to James Beryl and Mollie A. Fairchild Mullins, on December 16, 1924. Joe grew up in Whitesburg, KY, the youngest of 5 children, 3 sisters and 1 brother who predeceased Joe. His parents owned a small general store in the "holler." He met Pat in the third grade. They dated throughout high school and married Patricia McClure shortly before his separation from active duty. Joe T. and Pat raised three children. Joe was preceded by his wife, Pat; son, Tommy Lee; and daughter, Patricia Jo. He is survived by his son, Scott (Marge) Mullins of Chandler, AZ.

Joe graduated from Whitesburg High School. When he was 18, he was drafted. He and 15,000 other men crossed the Atlantic on the Queen Mary which had been commissioned as a transport vessel during the WWII. He spent most of his service time in France as an Air Force medic and was still in France on VE Day. He served from April 7, 1943 until October 21, 1945. He married Pat on September 14, 1945 and then moved to Lexington where Joe attended the University of Kentucky on the GI Bill and earned his degree in Commerce. Through his good deeds, he earned inclusion into The Honorary Order of Kentucky Colonels. He worked as a gas station attendant and a shoe salesman to pay the bills. After college, he worked as a project manager at Jefferson Proving Grounds in Indiana for 8 years. In 1958, Joe and 28 other young families at Jefferson moved to Yuma to work at YPG until his retirement in 1985. YPG renamed one of the firing ranges to "Mullins Square" in honor of Joe's long career in munitions testing. Joe and Pat enjoyed going out of town to see stage shows and swing dance. His sense of humor was evident to all and he was a man who liked a limerick. Joe was devoted to Pat and his family for more than 68 years. He had been a resident at Ironwood Estates for the past four years until his wife passed last month. Joe will be greatly missed by his son and his wife, his church family, and many friends.
