Julius Joseph "Joey" Dettrich II, 25, of Arlington born September 23, 1988, passed away tragically on October 10, 2013 from a car accident. He is survived by parents Heidi (Bill) Johnson of Arlington, sister Brooke Johnson of Arlington, father William "Bill" Dettrich of Snohomish, sister Lexi Dettrich of Roseburg, Oregon, grandparents Willam "Bill" Sr. and Donna Dettrich of Lake Stevens, Connie Johnson of Arlington, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by his Grandpa Thomas "Tom" Johnson, and Grandmother Georgia Anderson.
Joey attended Marysville, and then Arlington schools graduating in 2007. He loved to play all sports including soccer, basketball, wrestling, and football. His main passion though was Baseball. He met his goal of being drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays Baseball organization directly out of high school and played in their minor league system in the 2007, 2008, and 2009 seasons until an injury forced retirement. He then utilized his training and talents with many younger players through coaching and lessons. He loved the game, and gave it all he had within him. He coached many teams at Hard Knocks, and Laces Baseball Academys. His most recent accomplishment was as pitching coach for the Everett Community College Trojan Baseball team that won the NWAC 2013 Championship. In addition to furthering his baseball pursuits, he was continuing his education at Everett Community College to pursue a career in Fire Science, and worked at Crystalite in Everett. Joey also enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time with friends and family, going to concerts, snowboarding, golfing, and having a good time no matter what he was doing.
Joey was a kind, outgoing, and friendly person. He loved his family, his many friends, and his Chocolate Labs, Slider and Emma. He always took the time to try to connect with everyone, and didn't know a stranger.
A celebration of his life will be held at the Byrnes Performing Arts Center in Arlington on Sunday, October 27th, 2013 at 2pm. The family requests that you wear a favorite baseball hat, or a team hat if you played with or for him to help demonstrate how many lives he touched in the baseball community. Donations may be made to the Joey Dettrich Baseball Foundation in c/o Edward Jones, 427 N Olympic Ave, Arlington WA for a select baseball scholarship fund through the Arlington Education Foundation, to help other Arlington and Snohomish County kids have the opportunity to advance to the next level.
The family wishes to thank the many first responders that worked so hard on Joey's behalf, especially Phil Knepper.
