Dean, Johanna Elizabeth - Was a beautifully charming, intelligently warm, vibrantly spirited, caring, and lovely young lady. She brought laughter and happiness to everyone she shared moments with.
She passed suddenly at an early age of thirty on a bright and sunny afternoon - May 21st. She did not suffer during her passing, she felt no pain. She passed doing one of her favorite activities, biking. We can all take solace in knowing she was happy during her final moments; I'm sure even day dreaming in the beautiful sun, moments before she passed. Upon her passing she was received into God's light and love by her father, John, and her two deceased grandmothers who were there to welcome her into the transition period of the afterlife with loving open arms.
Johanna believed wholeheartedly in an afterlife, guardian angels, spirit guides, messages and guidance from her deceased loved ones and the higher power connecting all of us. She will be in this transition time for three days from her passing but rest assured upon the third day she will be ushered into heaven as brightly and energetically as she lived here on earth. She hears our prayers and loving thoughts so please continue to talk to her. She is so happy to hear all of the nice things you have to say.
Johanna comes from a big loving family including Mother, Shirley Dean (Father, John - deceased) a twin sister Julie, older sisters Cherie (Michael Leigh), Jackie, and Kelly (Brian Kennedy); Nephew and nieces Christopher, Cailyn, and Kiera. They along with her friends and coworkers share many beautiful memories of her.
Along her path and journey here on earth she deeply touched people during her experiences in Brownies, Girl Guides, soccer with Halifax Dunbrack soccer club, cheerleading with starlite all-stars, and being a sister in her sorority Iota Beta Chi during university at Dalhousie where she studied Psychology; during her teaching studies at Acadia University, and at all of the schools where she has taught French immersion during her five year career.
She cherished each class she taught ending every year by saying "this class is the one I loved the best" and she meant it. She was a fantastic teacher who took so much pride in her work and gave so much of her energy and time to be the best teacher she could be. Her family and friends truly believe that she fulfilled her life's destiny while here in the physical world.
Whether her purpose was to be a integral member of a loving family, holding them together during both fun and tough times; to be such an inspirational and guiding sister to her twin who needed her so very much during a low time; to be a beautiful friend to so many who loved her positive energy; to be an affectionate and devoted mother to her pets Winnie and Winston; to be a fantastic and model worthy teacher to many years of deserving children.
Whatever her destined path was she completed it to God's fullest expectations. It may seem unfair to take such a beautiful person inside and out so early from earth, but it was her time. Please feel comfort in knowing we will all see her again when it is our turn to cross over.
Please join Johanna's family and friends in the celebration of her life in a wake service in JA Snow Funeral Home , 339 Lacewood Drive Hfx. NS B3S 0E1(455-0531) Monday May 26 from 4pm-8pm and funeral services Tuesday, May 27at 10:30 am at Saint Benedict Church, followed by a joyous gathering celebrating Johanna's life at the church hall.
Please wear light and bright clothing and help us share stories and memories of our loving daughter, sister, aunt, mother, friend, and coworker Johanna.

She was an amazing women and had a huge impact on my life. If it wasnt for her I wouldnt be speaking French at all. She made me laugh and smile when I was down. She was the best grade 2 teacher anyone could ask for. I give my support to her family and loved ones. Six years goes by so fast.

She was my grade 6 teacher, a lovely teacher at that. Any student could walk in her room sad, upset or angry and leave laughing and joyful. She really impacted my life in a way I will and can't forget. May her beautiful soul rest in peace.

I'm sorry that I did not know Johanna has passed. I don't read the news and today I am sad after learning from a client that Johanna is no longer with us. Years ago I used to do her nails. She was an incredibly funny and amazing person. She was always so upbeat and had such funny stories to tell. I know she loved all the children she taught and she loved life. She lit up the room. I am so glad that I had a chance to know her. God bless you and thank you for being such an amazing person. I know you will never be forgotten.

Johanna was for a brief period three years ago a French tutor to our daughter Lexie. Her effervescent spirit and joy for life had Lexie completely in her thrall within moments of their first meeting and after just a few sessions Lexie developed a beautiful French accent. Last weekend I removed the training wheels from Lexie's bicycle and as she bravely completed her first unaided circuit of the playground Johanna was very much in my thoughts. Given how quickly Lexie came to adore Johanna I cannot imagine how hard this is for Johanna's students but without doubt she will have touched each of their lives with her spirit and her joy.

Dear Dean Family,
I learned this morning of Johanna's passing and was filled with emotion for my sweet patient of 7 years. Everytime I saw Johanna she brought such sunshine into my life. Even during times when she was feeling unwell she came to clinic with a smile and a positive outlook. She was remarkable and I will remember her forever.

You have my deepest sympathies on the sudden passing of Johanna. I have so many fond memories of playing on Canary whether it was skipping in the driveway, watching 'The Land before Time' on repeat or singing along to Meatloaf. I am so unbelievably saddened to hear about this tragic loss. I'm so happy to have been able to run into Johanna not too long ago and catch up, and see first hand what an amazing woman, the sweet and caring girl I knew, had become.
How loved she was by all who knew her and what a mark she has left on so many lives.
I am so sorry that I am not able to celebrate her life with you today as I am in Toronto at the moment, but please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Lots of love not only today, but in all the days to come,

Dear Shirley, Julie and family,
My sadness is so deep and I express sympathies to your family. Johanna and Julie babysat my daughters, Kelsey and Meghan on Flamingo Drive. During a difficult time for myself and my girls, the twins and the whole Dean family helped to make things better. Their warm family gave me hope that we could do the same. I can see Julie and Johanna playing in the backyard with my girls...laughing and having fun.
Our deepest sympathies and prayers are with you,

Dear Julie, I am so sorry to hear about the tragic loss of your dear sister. It was always a lot of fun playing soccer with you girls and growing up together with a lot of the same friends.God truly does work in mysterious ways, it is all a part of his plan for us and the world. I am moved by your strength and the strength of your family. You wrote a lovely piece about your sister and it will serve as inspiration for me and countless others. You are wise and strong beyond your years. Johanna influenced so many lives through her teaching and her passing at such a young age is the greatest lesson for all of us. I know that many people will be comforted through this time because of your words, strength and spirituality. I wish you and your family peace, strength and love. All the best to you Julie, now and always. Terri Mann

Mrs. Dean, Julie and Family:
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Johanna's passing. Though I had not seen Johanna in a few years, I have fond memories of growing up together at Grosvenor Wentworth Elementary and my last year at Fairview before I moved. I remember sitting at your kitchen table working on our Monarch butterfly project and the purple t-shirt she wore while playing kick the can (the one that said "I am Johanna, not Julie"). I know that she would have made a wonderful teacher and I hope you can take solace in knowing that she touched the lives of many people in her short time here. My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this difficult time.

I went to Fairview Junior High with both Julie and Johanna many moons ago ;) I am so sorry to hear of the loss of such a beautiful person!
I use to love seeing the expression on their faces when you would run into just one of the twins, I would pause and say... "Ok, Julie or Johanna?" and they would laugh as I am sure they encounterd this often!
I was amazed at how your family is so comforting and will be wearing all bright colors at Johanna's funeral to celebrate her life! Julie stay strong for not only yourself but your family and may God bless you all!

Johanna and I were colleagues for a short time, but we would catch up during my visits to the Armview. She would always greet us with a huge smile and wave. Then she would grab a minute to jog over and catch up if we weren't lucky enough to be seated in her area. She would update me on her class and pets (as we both shared a love of dogs). I will miss those exchanges, but endeavor to put her energy and passion into my teaching and loving those around me that much more. My sincere sympathy. Rest in peace, Johanna.

I didn't know Johanna personally, but reading the obituary and hearing about her makes me feel like I did. I'm a teacher too, and I know the special joy that comes from this career. Why has her death touched a stranger so much? Not only do we have a chosen career in common, but I also studied Psychology at Dal. I also loved cycling, though I haven't done it in a few years. I also have 2 fur-babies. And I also believe our loved ones will greet us when we leave the physical world.
Another reason that hearing about Johanna's death has prompted me to write this condolence is that I happened to come across the accident mere minutes after it happened Wednesday afternoon. I saw the bicycle, the ambulance. And I saw the paramedics putting Johanna on the board to put her in the ambulance. I said a prayer as we traveled past on Windmill. I'm so sorry that it wasn't answered, but I do hope that you find comfort in all the kind words here. Sending thoughts of love and positive energy to your family.

She has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much;
Who has enjoyed the trust of pure mankind, the respect of the intelligent and the love of little children;
Who has filled her niche and accomplished her task;
Who has never lacked appreciation of Earth's beauty or failed to express it;
Who has left the world better than she found it,
Whether an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul;
Who has always looked for the best in others and given them the best she had;
Whose life was an inspiration;
Whose memory a benediction.
Rest in everloving peace, Johanna

Dearest Johanna, you have been taken from us all too soon. However, I will always remember you sitting at my mom, listening to our silly childhood stories and saying, "tell me another one." Although you have been taken from this world in a physical sense, I know you are ever present to those who know and love you.

Our deepest sympathies to Johanna's friends and family. Johanna or Mme.Dean as we called her, was an inspiration and wonderful teacher to my daughter Calista. She was Calista's grade 2 teacher at John W. Macleod covering a maternity leave that kept her there the entire year for 2011-2012. Calista often talks about Mme. Dean bringing in her twin sister to meet them all and how she thought that was so special. Then when seeing her at The Armview, Calista was so happy to see her smiling face and Johanna always had a hug for her. Calista gave her a pendant on her last day of school and she told Calista she would cherish it forever. She definitely left an imprint on my daughter's heart and will be missed terribly. We are so sorry for your loss. Dina and Calista Spillner

I am so saddened to know of Johanna's tragic passing; a life cut far too short. Though I lost touch with Johanna after high school, both Johanna and Julie were pillars in my public schooling since primary. I remember being so proud to have made the first 4x100m relay in grade six with Julie and Johanna - being in their rank was something I didn't think I could accomplish. Johanna was such an athletic superstar.

There are so many things I want to say, and very few words that can truly describe how heartbroken I am.
Johanna… I have so many wonderful memories of you and the rest of our elementary class. I will never listen to another Boyz II Men song, kick another soccer ball, or stroll down Canary without thinking of you. You'll always be in my memories, thoughts and prayers. I know you're in heaven playing Kick the Can.
Julie…My deepest condolences to you, your mom, your sisters and the rest of your family. Until the day you meet again, you'll always have a beautiful angel watching over you.
