John Basil Grot, of Columbus (Midland), Georgia, passed into the hereafter on Friday, May 12, 2017.
John was loved by many during his lifetime, and he was a generous man with a kind soul. He never met a stranger, and he was quick to greet people with a warm smile and a cheerful glint in his eyes.
He was born on March 27, 1943 in Rockford, Illinois to Arnold and Olga Grot. He later graduated from Indiana University's business school, and he went on to work many jobs in steel related industries leading to his acquisition of Pascoe Building Systems in the 1980's.
He joined the U.S. Army, and he was stationed in Germany during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Linda Nottleman Grot, and his stepdaughter, Erica Nottleman; his three children, Cynthia M. "Cindy" Salmon (David) of Green Valley, AZ, Sandra "Sandie" J. Hardeman of Box Springs, GA, and Robert Grot of Chattanooga, TN; his grandchildren, John "L.J." Thomas, Michael Hardeman, Bennett Grot, and Charlie Rose Grot; brothers Richard and Arnie and sister Mary, as well as many nieces, nephews and their children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Cynthia, and his brother Bob of Burnt Hills, NY.
Most of all, John enjoyed spending time with his family. But, John also loved to travel the world over including much of North America, Europe, Ukraine, several Middle Eastern countries, China, Japan, and South Korea, which he particularly enjoyed.
He loved the water, and he enjoyed spending his idle hours boating on Lake Harden, Lake Martin, Alabama, and the Caribbean waters of St. Thomas.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Jason Robertson and Ebbie Tompkins of Preffered Care Hospice for their loving care.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to Preferred Hospice Care, #3 Bradley Court, Suite. C, Columbus, GA 31904.
