John Louis Hartman III, of Birmingham, died Friday at the age of 70 at his home in Vestavia. Born October 27, 1944 in Birmingham, John attended St. Paul's Catholic School and John Carroll High School. He graduated from Auburn University in 1965 (B.S. Business/Accounting) and from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1968. On April 5, 1974, he married the love of his life, Carolyn Osborne. Devoted husband, loving father, loyal friend, and consummate professional, John will be dearly missed. He brought to life a rare combination of talents and traits. At the office, he was a creative and practical problem-solver – an invaluable advisor to his clients and business partners. He made a positive difference in the lives of countless individuals, taking on their concerns and aspirations as his own and guiding them towards good decisions. In the community, he was a humble servant, especially in his work as a Board-member and longtime supporter of Children's Harbor. At home, he was known as "Pop," and he took care of everyone and everything – with pleasure. He was extremely grateful for his wife, Carolyn, and for their beautiful marriage of almost 41 years. He was a hero to his children, a cut-up with his grandchildren, and a fun and faithful friend to many. In all areas of his life, John exemplified hard work, common sense, generosity, and kindness. He will be remembered for his quick wit and dry humor, his can-do spirit, and his love of Auburn football and long days at the lake. John is preceded in death by his parents, John Louis Hartman, Jr. and Grace McMillan Hartman, and by his sister Joan Hartman Voce. He is survived by his wife Carolyn; four children, John Louis Hartman IV (Rima), Joel Lamar Hartman (Amy), Paige Hartman Kyle (John), and Joshua Louis Hartman (Kate); ten grandchildren, John Louis Hartman V ("Luke"), Peter George Hartman, Ella Rose Hartman, Charles Abraham Hartman, John Roland Kyle III ("Jack"), William Hartman Kyle, and Matthew Blake Kyle, all of Birmingham, and Abigail Logan Hartman, Carter Hobson Hartman, and Samuel Louis Hartman, of Atlanta, Georgia; and his brother David Prentice Hartman (Mary) of Alpharetta, Georgia. Services will be held at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 3775 Crosshaven Drive in Birmingham, on Monday, March 30 at 3:00, followed by a celebration of his life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to Children's Harbor at 1 Our Children's Highway, Alexander City, Alabama, 35010. The family wishes to thank Suzanne, Mary Nell, Keisha and Beverly for their tender care.

John Hartman was a great mentor to me, as a young, know-nothing lawyer. I am forever grateful for his kindness and friendship. He's been a true blessing to so many.
