John Alley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 1, 2015.

John Lee Alley, 79, of Chattanooga, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2015.

He was born at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee on December 4, 1935 to Corrine Lee and Clyde Dunne Alley, Sr. of Springfield, Tennessee. John graduated from Springfield High School and the University of Tennessee. After working in business for several years he entered the University of Tennessee Law School where he earned his law degree in 1966. He and his family then settled in Chattanooga where he worked for Witt, Gaither, Abernathy & Wilson. In 1974, John opened his own law firm in Hixson where he practiced law for 40 years. John loved the law, and he loved being a practicing attorney. He took great pride in his defense of the Bill of Rights and was instrumental in several prominent constitutional law cases in the city. John was an avid sports fan and a lifelong supporter of the University of Tennessee athletics.

John is survived by his children, Stephen (Kristal) Alley of Mexico City, Mexico and Kristen Alley (David) Richardson of Charlotte, North Carolina. One of his greatest joys in life was spending time with his grandchildren, Macon Alexandra Richardson of Brooklyn, New York, Jacob Evans Richardson of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Payton Nicole Alley and Avery Danielle Alley, both of Mexico City. He is also survived by his brothers Clyde (Peggy) Alley, Jr. of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, James (Mary Boyd) Alley of Lynchburg, Virginia, his sister Harriett Warren of Nashville, Tennessee, and numerous nephews and nieces. John had a generous spirit and an immense devotion to and love for his family and will be greatly missed by them.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Many thanks to the wonderful staff and nurses at Hospice of Chattanooga for their dedicated care, kindness and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made in John's name to Hospice of Chattanooga, 4411 Oakwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37416.

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.

I was a court reporter in Chattanooga and had the pleasure of working with John for many years, but I first met him when I was a young waitress in a northgate restuarant in the early seventies. He was always a gentleman, kind, considerate, generous to everyone. I would usually see him on Monday morning docket call when most were hurried and grouchy. Not John! Great smile, great attitude, always a joy. So sorry for your loss.

I worked in law offices since 1966 and John was as fine a lawyer and man as I ever met. Rest in peace John. My condolences to his family.

My sympathy to all of John's family in this time of loss. I met him in 1979 when I moved to Chattanooga and remember his quiet wit and wisdom. Anytime our paths crossed over the years, he always seemed genuinely glad to take a few minutes to catch up. A very kind soul!

Helping him do his newspaper route; seeing him in the stands when i played HS basketball; Rooming with him in the old U. of T. East stadium (the athletes dorm), and partnering with John in many bridge games in Springfield and at the university student center are just a few of the good memories of John Lee this younger brother carries.
He was a great lawyer, I'm told (I never needed his litigation services), but he was also a great friend to me.We had some very different worldviews but this never interfered with our love for each other.
Our long phone conversations in recent years are special in my memory, as well as three or four recent visits. Both always closed with each of us reminding the other that "I love you".
Yes, I certainly hope to see him again as I remain convinced (for 50+ years) that this life is just the entrance way into the next.
A big thank you really doesn't cover my gratitude to many friends who joined me in prayers for him.

So very saddened to hear of John's passing! He was a life-long friend, and childhood classmate of my dad's, George Edwards. Our families 'grew up' together back in the sixties and seventies, and even took family vacations together. He was a Hixson neighbor, he and my dad would go to lunch or dinner weekly, and was a tenant in the law office I presently work in today. His family will be in our thoughts and prayers! <

He was absolutely the BEST attorney I've ever known. I had hoped to see and visit with him again. I'm really, really sorry I was unable to do so.
