John Allred Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 9, 2012.

John Norman Allred, 88, formerly of Sunrise Beach and Kansas City, Missouri joined Jesus Christ on April 7, 2012 from The Laurie Care Center, Laurie, Missouri. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 13, at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, located at 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri. Funeral services at 3:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Mt. Moriah Cemetery. The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, a contribution to Laurie Care Center for the wonderful and loving care provided by each and every person. John was born May 23, 1923 to John Sanford Allred and Geneva Ann (Bechtel) Allred in Kansas City, Missouri. He went to Hale Cook, Southwest, Kansas City Jr. College and The Conservatory of Music. He was a member of the following churches: Country Club Christian, Swope Park Methodist, St. Luke's United Methodist and Ozark Chapel United Methodist. John enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and served in the China, Burma, India Theatre with the 125th AACS Squadron during World War II. He was a veteran and member of the American Legion Post 624 in Sunrise Beach, Missouri. While waiting to be called to active duty working at Hall Brothers, he met the love of his life Joanne E. Boucher. Five months later they married before he went overseas. Upon his return from World War II in 1946 was reunited with his beautiful and sweet wife. They had two sons and were very active in church. He coached baseball in the Southeast League for many years (Swope Park Methodist and The Advertisers). He enjoyed trying to teach his sons to play football, basketball, baseball, pole-vaulting, and water skiing. He loved to play golf, read and spend winters in Tucson, Arizona in the Winnebago with their World War II friends. The Lake of the Ozarks was a special place for him starting in the 1930's when his family would camp and vacation there. He built a cabin with his father in 1958 and a new home with his son in 1978. In 1979 they moved to the lake. He could build and fix just about anything and was usually whistling some tune. He was very happy with his wife and life, enjoying his sons families and all of their dogs, especially the bulldogs. John was a professional musician for over 65 years, starting when he was thirteen and was a lifetime member of the Kansas City Musicians Union Local 34-627. He had his own band and played with the Jimmy Tucker Orchestra. He played saxophone and clarinet with many other bands in Kansas City including Henry Mancini, Buddy Morrow, Les Elgart, Bob Crosby, Harry James, Stan Kenton, Temptations, Spinners, The Lake of the Ozark Orchestra, and The Lake of the Ozark Jazz Band. John worked for the U.S. Postal Service retiring as Superintendent of Hickman Mills Station after 30 years of government service in 1972. John was preceded in death by his brother S.W. Allred, wife of 60 years Joanne E. Allred, son James E. Allred and great-grandson Jake Phillip. He leaves his son John N. Allred and wife Donna of Leawood, Kansas; six grandchildren Sam and wife Leann, Pete, Jody and husband James Plumb, Brett, Jaclyn and husband Brian Legg, and Jenna; and six great-grandchildren Portia, Petra, Abigail, Samuel, Dean and Joanne; and his son James' life-partner Diane Schlegel. John was a loving, kind, and wise Christian man with a quick wit and large sense of humor. He was always there for his family and friends and was a mentor to many. He will be deeply missed by all. John, My deepenst condolences . Although I never met your dad, I've enjoyed all the stories you've shared with us about his Ozarks history. Everytime I see you take out the old boat, I'm sure you're taking years of memories out with you. I'll always remember your daughter's proposal on it as well... I have a strong feeling that your family will continue to keep his loving memory alive, not only at the Ozarks, but every day. Dalene

April 12, 2012

My deepest sympathies to the Allred family. John and Joanne were long-time friends of my parents Shirley and Carm Soricelli. Carm played with John in the Lake Jazz Orchestra and they both resided at Laurie Care Center. Carm is unable to attend the funeral or express his sympathies but I know he will miss his great friend and their many conversations about music and life at the Lake, something they both loved and enjoyed.
