With his wife and daughters at his side, John M. Barnes, Jr, passed away on September 22, 2010, due to complications related to cancer. John maintained his usual humor and optimism throughout the last 9 months despite multiple hospitalizations, bringing tears of laughter to the nurses and physicians of St. Vincent Hospital.
John was born to Barbara Jane and John M. Barnes, Sr. on December 23, 1942 in Portland. He graduated from Beaverton High School in 1961. He married his high school sweetheart, Lynda Thornburg, on December 27, 1964 a few months before they graduated from Oregon State University in June of 1965.
The couple returned to Beaverton to raise two daughters, Tracy and Trish. He earned an MBA from University of Portland and began a long career in banking in the Portland Area, most recently as a Mortgage Broker for Columbia Mortgage. He served as Treasurer on the Beaverton City Library Foundation.
To say he was an avid golfer would be an understatement. Despite his devotion to weekly rounds, John golfed for decades before securing his first "hole in one" at a tournament in October 2009. He taught and gave many aspiring golfers "free advice" including the Fearsome Foursome which consisted of his Brother-in- Law, Nephew, and Son-in-Law. He also loved rooting for the OSU Beavers, annual family vacations at Black Butte Ranch, attending his older grandsons' sporting events, traveling to Boise to see Trish and family, and any social event involving good food and good conversation.
John is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lynda; daughters, Tracy Fritts (husband Glenn) and Trish Barnes (husband Bill Hirai); grandchildren, Nathan, Carson, Daniel, and Kunie Lyn; his mother, Barbara, and sister Jane Nielsen (husband Nick). John also had numerous extended family members who were friends as well as relatives.
A celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at Cedar Hills United Church of Christ (11695 SW Park Way, Portland, OR, 97225), formerly Community Church of Cedar Hills. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Beaverton City Library Foundation or the Washington County Special Olympics.
Arrangements under the direction of Pegg, Paxson & Springer Funeral Chapel, Beaverton, OR.
