John Barthel Obituary

Born in Oak Park, Illinois on December 16, 1922. He was preceded in death by his father, John Barthel, mother, Rosella Ruth Le Suer Barthel, sister, Helenmae Barthel Slaton, friend and love, Audrey B. Waite. After graduation from the Chicago schools he attended the University of Illinois. In 1942 he received the Allerton Traveling Fellowship for three months study period of New England architecture. He joined the B12 Navel Reserve Program while at the university and completed two more semesters of study before entering midshipman's school in New York. He served as an engineering officer from 1944 to 1946. Returning to the University of Illinois he received a B.S. in architecture. In 1947 he received the Paris Prize which awarded him an 18 month study period at the LeCole de Beaux Art in Paris and travel throughout Europe. In 1949 he returned to the University of Illinios and received a B.S. in Architectural Engineering. In 1950 he studied at the Cranbrook Acedemy of Art receiving a Masters Architecture and City Planning under the tutelage of the late Eliel Sarrinen. He began his architectural career working in Chicago at the firms of "Skidmore, Owings and Merrill" and "Belli and Belli". In 1952 he moved to Dallas to work with George E. Dahl. In 2002 he received the 25 Year Residential Award from The Dallas Chapter of the American Institute of Architecture. After many years of an active career he retired in 1991 to enjoy traveling, pursing the arts, painting and having good times with his many friends worldwide. A memorial donation in John's name may be made to the charity of your choice.

I met John when I did research for a church he designed in East Dallas, St. Pius X Catholic Church. This church, his house and John himself are amazing.

I met John at South Padre Island around 1970. We stayed in touch all these years and he was a fine man - I just loved him so much, as did my parents. Christmas will not be the same without his amazing cards.
