John Robert "Bobby" Bowmer, 81, an accomplished athlete, master home barbecue chef, gracious host and long-time investment advisor who navigated complicated financial matters from birth, passed away Monday, April 28, 2014 in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, May 2, 2014 in the chapel of Hampton Vaughan Funeral Home with the Rev. Gwen Morman, Chaplain at Hospice of Wichita Falls officiating. Interment will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5:00 -7:00 on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at the funeral home.

John was born with the lucky number three, on March 3, 1933 to Ray and Bess (Gibson) Bowmer in Wichita Falls, Texas at the onset of what would become known as the 'Banking Holiday' during the Great Depression. He graduated from Wichita Falls High School where he led the Coyotes to state football championship victories in 1949 and 1950. John was a football player in college where he played quarter back for 2 years at what is now Schreiner University and was named MVP, all-state and all-conference quarter back. He also led the school in singles and doubles tennis. John was inducted into the Schreiner Athletic Hall of Honor in 2004. He attended the University of Texas where he played both punter and quarterback and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity until he was drafted in the Army. He finished with a Bachelor's Degree in Geology at Midwestern University. After college, John worked for Shell Oil Co. until 1967 and then he went to work in the financial markets working with A.G. Edwards. E.F. Hutton & Co., Dean Witter Co. and finally, with Morgan Stanley Dean Witter where he retired as V.P. in 2009. John loved to fish, hunt, spin yarns and tell jokes. He was known to command multiple barbecues during the Fourth of July weekends as Lake Nocona. He was quick to support a friend and few people could match his patience, even in matters of the heart. The first time Bobby Bowmer proposed to Jan Ward, he was in college and she was still in high school. Her parents intervened, fearing Jan was too young. John was drafted and went off to the Army in Germany and Jan went to college at the University of Oklahoma. In time, they each married other people, raised families and divorced. They met again after Jan, who was by then Jan Reynolds, moved back to Wichita Falls. The second time Bobby proposed to Jan Ward Reynolds, she said yes and he gave her the engagement ring he had bought 40 years earlier. They married in 1991.

John is preceded in death by his daughter Melissa Bowmer.

Survivors are his wife, Jan; son, Robert Bowmer and wife Kimberly of Mesquite, TX; grandchildren, Megan Lucas, Ashley Bowmer and Christopher Bowmer; great granddaughter, Aria Lucas; a sister, Barbara Bowmer Davis.
