John Boyd Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 4, 2013.

John J. Boyd (“Jack”), age 79, of Atlanta, Ga. was called home after a two-year battle with cancer on July 3, 2013.

Jack grew up in Southern Indiana, and graduated from Indiana University.  He served as a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force in Korea.

His career represents 35 years of leadership in Human Resources. He served as Senior V.P. of HR for Rich’s Department Stores, and was an executive with the founding of Venture, a division of May Department Stores in St. Louis, Missouri. Jack also worked with the Bureau of Industrial Relations at the University of Michigan, co-designing a training methodology called Management By Objectives (MBO). As part of the development of this new methodology, he conducted international training programs and contributed to publications used in the promotion of the program. Following his “first retirement”, Jack joined his son in the new area of technology for HR. Together they identified and marketed Human Resource and Payroll Software developed by leaders in the field. During his years spent in Human Resources, Jack has been directly involved in all aspects of resume design and review, applicant interviewing, college recruitment, executive development, and training development. Throughout his career, proper interviewing techniques and thoroughness have been a genuine passion for Jack.

In his “second retirement”, Jack continued to pursue that passion and put his experience to use by volunteering with the Crossroads Program at Peachtree Presbyterian Church.

Jack’s favorite hobby, and some of his greatest talents were with woodworking.  He enjoyed his own wood projects, as well as teaching and mentoring others with a love of craftsmanship.

Jack is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margaret Campbell Boyd, his son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Kim Boyd, and two granddaughters, Kathryn and Kelly Boyd and a brother, William E. Boyd.  He is pre-deceased by his parents and one son, John William “Johnny” Boyd.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Jack’s memory to pancreatic cancer research, at www.tgenfoundation.org.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 4:30pm at Peachtree Presbyterian Church, 3417 Roswell Road in Atlanta.

In Jack's own words: “Keep the faith, keep doing what you are doing. Continue to have the love of God, that is your first priority beyond any of the churchmanship, beyond any of the politics, or beyond any other pressures going on. You have been an example to me and to others.”

Dear Boyd Family,

It is with deep sorrow that I write this. I served with Jack on the Crossroads ministry panel. His love for others and passion with which he served were memorable.
He fought a GREAT fight to the end. It is a testimony to all of you that he lasted with his cancer for so long.
I pray for peace and healing for all of you and know that God has Jack nearby at this moment.
God Bless all of you!
