John Daniel Carroll, age 88, of Sun City, AZ and formerly of Deer River, MN passed away on August 17, 2013 at Banner Boswell Hospital in Sun City, AZ. He was born on August 23, 1924 in St. Paul, MN to Thomas J. Carroll and Katherine (Donahue) Carroll. He proudly served in the US Marine Corps in WWII in the Pacific aboard the USS Essex. Following graduation from the University Of Minnesota School Of Mortuary Science in 1948, he moved to Deer River to work for Herreid Brother in their funeral home and hardware store, now Jurvelin's Hardware. John Daniel Carroll, age 88, of Sun City, AZ and formerly of Deer River, MN passed away on August 17, 2013 at Banner Boswell Hospital in Sun City, AZ. He was born on August 23, 1924 in St. Paul, MN to Thomas J. Carroll and Katherine (Donahue) Carroll. He proudly served in the US Marine Corps in WWII in the Pacific aboard the USS Essex. Following graduation from the University Of Minnesota School Of Mortuary Science in 1948, he moved to Deer River to work for Herreid Brother in their funeral home and hardware store, now Jurvelin's Hardware. In 1956, he and his first wife, Dorothy, founded the Carroll Funeral Home in Deer River, which he owned and operated until retiring in 1984. He was very active in the Minnesota Funeral Directors Association, serving as its president in 1973 and was active in many community organizations. He was an early board member of the new Deer River Community Hospital, a past worshipful Master of Chippewa Lodge #275 AF & AM of the Masons, a member of the Shrine Aad Temple and rode in the Shrine motorcycle patrol for several years. He was a past president of the Deer River Lions Club and a member of the Deer River VFW. He was also a member of the Sun City Elks and Grand Rapids Moose Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Irma G. Moore-Carroll, daughter, Nancy (David) Peterson of Marcell, MN, grandchildren: Jenny (Dan) Reed and Adam (Jenn) Peterson, great-grandchildren; Jonathan, Jacob and Grace Reed, and by his brother, Thomas J. Carroll of Las Vegas, NV. He is also survived by Irma's children; Dwight & Steve Moore, Lynne Avery & Shelley Littlefield-Price, and by Millie Becker Carroll's children, Judy Toffoli, and Brad & Gary Pierson. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers; Donald & Robert, his wife Dorothy (1981) and his wife Millie (2002).
There will be a service at the Congregational Church in Sun City on Wednesday, August 21 at 2pm. In Minnesota, a visitation will be held from 4-8:00 pm Sunday, August 25 at Carroll Funeral Home in Deer River, MN with a Masonic service at 7pm. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 26 at 11am at Bethany Lutheran Church in Deer River. Burial will be at Pine Ridge Cemetery in Deer River.
John had a soft spot in his heart for the Shiners' Children's hospital.
