He was born in Keene, NH, December 17, 1932, the son of James and Pearl (Russell) Carroll. He was a lifelong resident of the Keene area graduating from Keene High School and Keene Teachers College.

Mr. Carroll, a Marine Corp veteran, was Marine through and through and proudly served his country during the Korean War. He was the recipient of a purple heart from injuries received during that conflict. While recuperating from said injuries, he and Kathleen A. Lagrenade, an attending nurse, met, then courted and were soon married and raising their family.

Mr. Carroll was a history teacher for many years at Keene High School and Keene Junior High School. He was also an ownership partner of the former Sullivan Golf Course in Sullivan, NH. The Carroll family are longtime parishioners of St. Bernard Church in Keene and since having moved to Troy the Immaculate Conception Church of Troy.

While his sons were growing up, he coached their pee wee and little league baseball teams. He was a voracious reader, enjoyed golf, fishing, and playing cards. He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. He was known for his "sharp mind", his humble and mild mannerism and his loving commitment to family.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kathleen A. (Lagrenade) Carroll of Troy; two sons, David G. Carroll and his wife, Kathleen, of Chichester, NH, Thomas R. Carroll of Troy and his friend, Isabelle Jolie of Harrisville, NH; a daughter-in-law, Rosalla Carroll of Stoddard, NH; five grandchildren, Jason Carroll, Derek Carroll, Kaitlin Carroll, Julianna Carroll, Jacob Carroll; two sisters, Frances Hodsdon of Ocala, Florida, Loretta Parker and her husband, Richard, of Zephyr Hills, FL; sisters-in-law, Jeanne Richard of Gardner, MA, Brenda Vezina and her husband, Leon, of Melbourne, FL; and several nieces and nephews. He was tragically predeceased by one of his sons, Daniel J. Carroll in 2007, and his youngest sibling, his brother, Roger K. Carroll in 2010.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, July 8, 2013 at 9:30AM in the Immaculate Conception Church, 37 School Street, Troy. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Main Street, Keene. Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mr. Carroll's memory to Northeast Passage, (http://nepassage.org/) c/o UNH Foundation, Inc., University Advancement, Elliott Alumni Center, 9 Edgewood Road, Durham, NH 03824-1934.

"I have many fond memories of John. We taught together for a few years in the 70's. It was with his encouragement that I became a part time real estate..." Robert Boisselle (Fall River, MA)
