On Wednesday, May 18, 2011, John Ciortan, Indian Head, SK. passed away at the age of 89 years. John was born June 6, 1921 in Qu'Appelle, SK. The funeral service will be held in St. Andrew's United Church, Indian Head on Monday May 23, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Suzanne Edgar officiating. A public visitation will be held in Tubman Funeral Home, Indian Head on Sunday, May 22, 2011 from 2 – 5 p.m. The only son of 11 children, John was devoted to helping his parents on the dairy farm. He attended Grassmere Country School where his favourite recess pastime was playing baseball. His love of baseball continued for the rest of his life. John met Eleanor MacDonald in 1945 when she moved to Qu'Appelle to work for the Royal Bank. They married on November 12, 1946 and lived on a farm in the Qu'Appelle area until 1976 when they moved to Indian Head. John was a self-taught carpenter, electrician and mechanic. With these skills, he willingly helped family, friends and his community. While living on the farm near Qu'Appelle, he served as a board member of the R.M. for one term. He also supplemented the farm income by working as an assistant auctioneer. John was very involved in the Qu'Appelle Figure Skating Association and was instrumental in organizing successful Winter Carnivals. He enjoyed attending local sports events, such as curling, Qu'Appelle Wings and Indian Chiefs hockey games and the community sports days and parades. John had a great sense of humour. He entertained many friends and family with joke telling and stories of his life. One of his favourite stories was about his horse named Bell. She died suddenly when pulling a sleigh home one winter day and John came home and told the family, " That was the last ding out of Bell." While living in Indian Head, John was employed by The Indian Head School District and continued to farm with his son, Nick. He retired from employment with the school district at the age of 66, but, like most farmers, he never retired from farming. John and Eleanor were very involved in the Anglican Church Communities of both Qu'Appelle and Indian Head. They participated in local social activities, volunteered with Meals on Wheels and visited friends in the Golden Prairie Home. John loved his children and grandchildren very much. He provided his expertise in many home improvement projects always willing to lend a hand and the use of his many power tools. No car left John's driveway without him checking the oil, windshield washer fluid and tire pressure. He and Eleanor attended many of their children and grandchildren's graduations, as well as band concerts, dances, music recitals, plays, sports events and other activities. John will be greatly missed by his family. He will never be forgotten and will always be in our hearts. John was predeceased by his wife Eleanor; parents Alex and Joanna; sisters: Sue, Eve, Eleanor, Helen and Mary and son-in-law Gordon Spencer. He is survived by his children: Beverly Spencer, Nick Ciortan (Trudy), Pat Pederson (Tom), Sharon Schurko (David) and Linda Avram (Lloyd); eleven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; sisters: Anne, Irene, Flo, Ruth and Alexandra; two brothers-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews. If friends so desire, contributions may be made to Golden Prairie Nursing Home (specifically for the Resident Activity Fund), Box 250, Indian Head, SK. S0G 2K0.

"Ciortan Family Our thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of loss. Keep all the GREAT memories close to your heart to help you thru those 'gray'..." Barry & Shirley Priddell (Qu'Appelle, SK)
