STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- John P. Farrell, 69, of Dongan Hills, a retired police of ficer for the NYPD, died yesterday at home. Born in Brooklyn, he settled in Dongan Hills in 1969. Mr. Farrell worked for 20 years as a police officer in the New York City Transit Police District 1 in Manhattan. He retired in 1985. After his retirement, he worked for 23 years as a supervisor in the security department at Merrill Lynch, Manhattan, retiring in 2008. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1964. STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- John P. Farrell, 69, of Dongan Hills, a retired police of ficer for the NYPD, died yesterday at home.

Born in Brooklyn, he settled in Dongan Hills in 1969.

Mr. Farrell worked for 20 years as a police officer in the New York City Transit Police District 1 in Manhattan. He retired in 1985.

After his retirement, he worked for 23 years as a supervisor in the security department at Merrill Lynch, Manhattan, retiring in 2008.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1964.

Mr. Farrell graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, Queens, and earned a bachelor's degree in behavioral science from the New York Institute of Technology.

Mr. Farrell was a member of the Police Benevolent Association; Fraternal Order of Police; Huttner-Pasqualini American Legion Post; the 10-13 Club, and the Seaver Avenue Men's Club.

He was a parishioner of St. Ann's R.C. Church, Dongan Hills.

An avid New York Mets fan, Mr. Farrell also enjoyed taking cruises, playing volleyball and spending time with his grandchildren.

"His family came first. He was a warm, loving, caring husband, father, brother and grandfather," said his daughter, Donna Lutz.

His grandson, Connor Donoghue, died in 1995.

In addition to his daughter, Donna, also surviving are his wife of 44 years, the former Marie Roszak; two more daughters, Barbara Donoghue and Karen Farrell; one brother, Bob Farrell; one sister, Rosemary Andersen, and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be Saturday from the Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Ann's Church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
