Retired Chief Petty Officer, John Albert Hudson, Jr., 87, of Lynchburg, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at his residence. Born August 19, 1925 in Amherst County, he was the son of the late John Albert Hudson, Sr. and the late Janie Irene Garrett Hudson and was also preceded in death by seven sisters, Virginia Minnis McCord, Frances Odelle Candler, Mary Beatrice Mills, Sarah Elizabeth Bellegia, Irene Marion Neal, Evelyn Marie Bibb, and Doris Estelle Wiesener and one brother, Curtis Calvin Hudson. Mr. Hudson retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer, spending twenty years on active duty and seven years in the Fleet Reserve....
Retired Chief Petty Officer, John Albert Hudson, Jr., 87, of Lynchburg, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at his residence.

Born August 19, 1925 in Amherst County, he was the son of the late John Albert Hudson, Sr. and the late Janie Irene Garrett Hudson and was also preceded in death by seven sisters, Virginia Minnis McCord, Frances Odelle Candler, Mary Beatrice Mills, Sarah Elizabeth Bellegia, Irene Marion Neal, Evelyn Marie Bibb, and Doris Estelle Wiesener and one brother, Curtis Calvin Hudson.

Mr. Hudson retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer, spending twenty years on active duty and seven years in the Fleet Reserve. He served during World War II, in Normandy, South France, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. He was also a retired Postman with the United States Post Office with eighteen years of service. He was a life member of the Fleet Reserve Assoc. and the V.F.W. He was also a member of the U.S.S. Texas, BB35, Veterans Assoc, the Marine Corp. League #759 and American Legion Post 16. Mr Hudson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Monroe.

Mr. Hudson loved making DVD's of his WWII and life experiences. He was an avid NASCAR fan, attending many races including over sixty races at the Martinsville Speedway. On Fridays, you could always find him at Monument Terrace, honoring the veterans. He loved his dog, Tiki, as well as gardening , taking care of his lawn, using his chain saw, and helping others in need.

Mr. Hudson is survived by nieces, nephews, veteran friends and a devoted niece, Peggy Friend.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 12, 2013 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with the Rev. John Pickett officiating. Interment with military Honors by American Legion Post 16 will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Friday at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to Mr. Hudson's caregivers, Debbie Johnson, Junior Thornhill, Margie Wooldrdige, Glenda Jennings, and Crickett Thibeault; his neighbors and friends, Charles and Pat Moore and devoted friend, Ruth Perry. They would also like to thank Centra Hospice, Alice Powell, RN, Harold Jones, CNA, and Social Worker, Katherine Kirkpatrick.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider First Baptist Church of Monroe or the Lynchburg Daily Bread.
