John Wesley Humphrey succumbed to the effects of Alzheimer Disease and passed away May 20, 2014, holding the hand of his dear wife Judy.
John was born on April 22, 1940, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Albert F. Humphrey Sr. and Lily Anna Mae Jones.
John married Linda Lee Worthen August 9, 1963. They had 6 children together during their 32 years of marriage. Together with their 6 children they share 19 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
He married Judith Rowley August 17, 1996. He was a loving father to her two sons and a loving grandfather to her 8 grandchildren.
John served four years in the U.S. Air Force, where he was stationed at Fort Lee, Virginia. It was in the Air Force that John learned his mechanic and boiler maintenance skills that he used throughout his career. He loved telling stories about his service in the Air Force. As his memory faded, it was those stories that endured and he could call back upon with clarity.
One of John's favorite pastimes when his kids were young was to take them motorcycle riding and camping in the west desert, and he spoke of this often. He loved being involved with his kids and their activities and enjoyed watching them succeed. John loved working on cars and would always laugh when he would talk about how he and a friend made a small mint fixing Ford Pintos. John was an avid fisherman and loved going fishing with his father at Lake Powell. He also loved fishing with his children and grandchildren; one of John's favorite places was Moon Lake. It was during his last trip to Moon Lake in 2012 that he said he hoped Heaven was like Moon Lake.
John worked for 29 years at Associated Foods as a mechanic in boiler maintenance, where he made lifetime friendships. Upon retiring from Associated, John then worked at LDS Hospital in boiler maintenance until he retired in 2005.
John will always be remembered for his love of children. He wouldn't hesitate to stop a young mother with young children at a store, a restaurant or on the street just to laugh and speak to the children or to coo at a baby. John also was a loving and patient grandfather.
He loved spending time with Judy; they had a lot of fun together and made many special memories. They went to Moab where John took Judy on her first four-wheeler ride. They also went on a cruise to Alaska, and many camping trips to Moon Lake.
John is preceded in death by his parents, stepson Lance and great-granddaughter Ethne.
John is survived by his wife, Judy; children Scott (Shauna), Todd (Renae), Chris (Allison), Brandy Warren (Brett); Matt (Hillary) and Adam (Linzi); brother Albert (Iona), and stepson Layne Ashton (Dot); 27 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and his and Judy's little dogs, Houston and Jack.
A viewing will be held on Monday, May 26th from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Dr, Salt Lake City. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, May 27th at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park with a viewing at 9 am and Graveside services at 10 am.
John's family would like to thank his friends at Aspen Care Center in Provo, where he loved to sing and dance. The family also wishes to thank his friends and caregivers at the Central Utah Veteran's Home in Payson, Utah, for the loving care they provided the final few months of John's life.
We would also like to thank Judy for her tireless care and love for our dad…angels come in all forms. "It's supposed to hurt - that's how you know it meant something!"
Arrangements under the direction of Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, Salt Lake City, UT.
