Hunter, John Edward, 82, Owner, Hunter and Son Construction, passed away July 1, 2014. John was preceded in death by his beloved son, Bryan, parents Frank and Ola Hunter, brothers, Joe and Marion, sisters, Georgia Cole and Goldie Annis. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Patricia (Pat), son Steven (Judy), daughters, Debra Thome (Mike), Pam Knowles (Bob), Sandra Haugen (Mick), Erin Kirby (Felipe), 17 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, brother and sisters, Jim Hunter (Nancy), Gloria Reiz (John), Kay Roberts (Don), Shirley Vanderbilt (Roy), Marilyn Crown (Rick), sisters-in-law, Willadean Hunter, JoAnne Hunter, numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved dog, Yoshi. John was born at home on November 29, 1931, the oldest son. In 1950, John joined the Marines and fought for his country in the Korean War, 1st Marine Division and fought at Gen. MacArthur's Inchon Landing and later at the Chosin Reservoir. Having been wounded twice in combat, John was a double recipient of the Purple Heart. In 1952, John married Patricia Walker. During this time, John carried on the construction business he started with his father in 1949, "Hunter and Son Construction". He began with waterproofing, concrete and foundation repair then ventured into the piering side of the business. His business name is stamped on many sidewalks and buildings in Wichita and surrounding Kansas towns. John took pride in his business and family, was a longtime member of the Wichita Area Builder's Association and became an honorary member after retiring in 2012. He was also a member of the Marine Corps League of Wichita and the American Legion. He was well liked and respected among his business associates, vendors and contractors. Funeral services will be at 3pm on Monday, July 7th, at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery following the service with full military honors. Visitation will be Sunday, July 6th from 6pm–8pm at Resthaven Mortuary. A special thanks to Interim Hospice and Nurse Amy for their compassion and care during John's illness.
