Services for John Edward Inman, 64, of Tyler are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 15, 2012 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Whitehouse, Texas with Rev. Bennie Portwood officiating under the direction of Lloyd James Funeral Home in Tyler. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery in Heavener, Oklahoma under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home of Heavener. He passed away on September 11, 2012 in Tyler, Texas.

Mr. Inman was born on September 20, 1947 in Fort Smith, Arkansas to the late Floyd and Lola Grice Inman. He graduated from Heavener High School in Heavener, Oklahoma, Poteau Junior College in Poteau, Oklahoma and Northeastern State College in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. He served in the U. S. Air Force and achieved the rank of Sgt. as a member of the Pacific Air forces in Bein Hoa, Vietnam. On December 14, 2002 he married Cynthia Wisdom in Whitehouse. He was a member of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Whitehouse.

He is the former sports editor of the Kilgore News Herald, the Longview News Journal and the sports information director at LeTourneau University. He was a member of the Texas Association of Sports Writers, the United Press International, Texas Press Association and Texas High School Coaches Association. Through the years he received numerous awards from the Associated Press, the Texas Press Association, Northeast Texas Press Association and the United Press Association. He wrote many stories for his high school alma mater and was currently writing a book on the history of Heavener football. He was a mentor to many young sports writers and helped to shape their careers.


He is survived by his wife, Cynthia of Tyler; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Paul Cook of Malakoff and their children, Brandon and Garrett; stepdaughter and her husband, Tammi and Kenny Carson of San Antonio and their children McKenna and Kenedi, stepson and his wife, Michael and Ora Linville of San Antoinio and their children, Micah and Verity. He is also survived by Karen's mother, Gale of Longview.

The family will receive friends from 9-10 a.m., Saturday at the church in the welcome center prior to the service.
