Obituary

John Augustus Kaufman, age 76, of St. Simons Island, died Monday, November 19, 2012. Mr. Kaufman was a life-long resident of Glynn County and was a member of the 1954 graduating class at Glynn Academy. He graduated from Mercer University in 1958 with a BA in economics and attended Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University. John Augustus Kaufman, age 76, of St. Simons Island, died Monday, November 19, 2012. Mr. Kaufman was a life-long resident of Glynn County and was a member of the 1954 graduating class at Glynn Academy. He graduated from Mercer University in 1958 with a BA in economics and attended Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University. He was a distinguished military graduate of Mercer University ROTC and was a Commissioned 2nd Lt. Quartermaster Corp in March of 1958. He graduated from Basic Quartermaster Corp School in Ft. Lee, VA where he served as a Public Information Officer and Athletic Officer of the 543 Quartermaster Group. He retired from the Army Reserve with the rank of Captain.

Mr. Kaufman joined Parker-Kaufman Realtors and Insurors in 1959 and served as Executive Vice-President, President and CEO. His professional organizations and designations included the Appraisal Institute – SRA and RM designations and served as the Savannah area Chapter President; the National Association of Realtors – Realtor Emeritus and served as Director from 1970 to 1978, Commercial and Investment Division CCIM designation, Appraisal Division GAA and RAA designations, Institute of Real Estate Management, CPM designation, President of Georgia Chapter and Charter South Georgia President, and the Georgia Association of Realtors, Graduate Realtors Institute GRI Designation where he served as state president in 1970.

Mr. Kaufman was very active in the community and served as a Deacon and Chairman of the Finance Committee at the First Baptist Church of Brunswick; past chairman of the Georgia Baptist Convention Foundation; past Master of Ocean Lodge #214 F & A.M.; past Chairman of the College of Coastal Georgia Foundation; past President of the Brunswick Rotary Club; past Chairman of the Brunswick Chapter of the American Cancer Society; trustee and past vice-chairman of Frederica Academy; director and secretary of the Board at SunTrust Bank of Southeast, GA; past President of the Escort's Club; past President of Sea Island Property Owner's Association; Trustee at Scottish Rite Hospital of Atlanta (Now Children's Hospital of Atlanta); and member of the Community Chorus – Messiah performance, for the past 25 years.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Patricia Craddock Kaufman; three children, John "Jay" Craddock Kaufman, Julie Christian Kaufman and Patrick Carr Kaufman; five grandchildren, Merritt Kaufman, Keaton Kaufman, Arden Kaufman, Patrick Carr Kaufman, Jr., and John Augustus Kaufman, II.

Visitation will be held Friday, November 23, 2012 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10:00 am at the First Baptist Church of Brunswick with Reverend Jim Wigham, Dr. Robert Mounts and Reverend Jimmy Crandall officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be William C. Smith, J. Thomas Whelchel, Thomas Sublet, Malcolm Seckinger, Raymond Mock, Newell Hamilton, Jack Hartman, Bill Downey, William W. Parker, David Ingold, Fred Tullos, Bernie Annis, Ron Maulden, David Smith, Steve McNichols, Dwayne Johnson, Frank Cerrato, Douglas C. Adamson, Jr., Richard Altman, Carroll Palmatery and the Glynn Academy class of 1954.

Donations may be made to the Mayo Clinic of Jacksonville Heart Transplant Department or to Autism Speaks.

Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
