On April 30, John Jude Lammerding (84), died unexpectedly at his home.

Dad was the backbone of our family: not only by providing for us, but representing a strong religious faith, a commitment to family, and living a life guided by honesty, charity and fairness.

Born in Elizabeth New Jersey July 3 1929, John always dreamed of being a pilot. He took his chances and dropped out of high school to join the Army Air Corp. It was a great decision, the Air Force introduced him to the love of his life Jane Haglund, and they enjoyed 60 years of marriage and three children.

Spending 21+ years in the Air Force, beginning with Officer Candidate School, John achieved his dream of flying B-57s. An exciting opportunity arose, taking his family to Japan where he was charged with training the Japanese Civil Air Defense. He later retired, attaining the rank of Captain.

Another personal goal of his was to earn a college degree. After leaving the Air Force John enrolled at the University of Alabama where earned his Master’s degree in Finance. Our final stop was Jacksonville where the family settled.

John’s strength of character was reflected in his love of family and the core values he believed in. He was always there to lend a helping hand to those in need and contributed his time in supporting community efforts, especially Veterans Affairs, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. His Catholic faith was unfaltering and was a long standing member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Having suffered the loss of his wife and two sons, Mark and Eric, John is survived by his daughter Amy Lammerding Dielo, three grandchildren Vesta Lammerding (NV), Gary Lammerding and Mollie Lammerding (OR); sister Ann Scavuzzo (NJ), brother Robert (Rita) Lammerding (NJ), sister Grace Henkel (NJ), sister in law Beverly Wink (WI), son in law Michael Dielo, and many nieces and nephews. I feel Dad’s loss in my life, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will be Tuesday May 6th from 6-8pm at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin. Services will be held the following day Wednesday May 7 at 11am, at St. Joseph’s Historic Catholic Church. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers please give to the charity of your choice or to the Eric and Mark Lammerding Professor of the Year Award at Jacksonville University.
