Oh Big John, I just got the news, I was pulling for you after our last text about your surgery........then the phone was silent.

Because of his stature, Big John looked down on many in a literal, physical sense, but in a figurative, judgemental sense, he looked down on no one. Big in openness and acceptance, big in friendship and loyalty, big in happiness and humor, John truly was a "big man on campus" at Rice University, where he was respected and loved, and will be mourned and missed.

"Johnny" - that was what I always called - was my first and only nephew. I knew him as a kind and wonderful person who had a great love for his family. I will miss him. Aunt Mary Ann

John was a great man, and an even greater husband. He treated Mary like a queen! They had a love that many of us could only dream of having. He loved and cherished his time with family and friends and was a man of endless talents. He will be greatly missed, especially the sound of his laughter... A true loss to so many who knew him. My heart goes out to the entire family... love you Mary! Be strong, we're here for you.

During the years we lived on campus at Rice, John came to our home many times and came to the rescue often. Whenever we had an electrical problem, I always asked for John. He had a wonderful presence. He filled the room with laughter. He was a person of great integrity in his life and in his work. Mary, Shane, Cory, John loved his family and spoke of you often. We are so sorry for your loss and we will all miss him. Elizabeth and Malcolm Gillis (Houston,TX)

John was a wonderful man. He was always such a joy to run into on campus and man, what a laugh! I'm really sorry for the loss. He will be missed. I just spoke to one of his co-workers who summed it up best. "He was one of the GOOD ones."

Dear Mary and family,

John came to my rescue 24 years ago when I bought my first house. I can still hear his huge laugh when he said "your daddy would whoop you for buying a house without any wiring". He wired not only that home but my Houston studio and numerous buildings at the farm. I loved his kindness, his brilliance and his dead pan sense of humor. I truly can't imagine walking on campus without him yelling from his golf cart....."hey broker". I just can't.

John, although our encounters were minimal, you were instrumental in shaping my life. Your fun, calm, strong, and in charge demeanor was the character that I remember so vividly about you. Thank you.
Mary, Cory, & Shane,
May fond memories of your husband/father/friend bring you comfort during this hard time in your life. Look back on all the good memories you were able to have and smile at the fact that you were able to share these before he passed away. Our hearts and prayers go out to you and your family.
