John Alan Lockhart, beloved son, brother, and friend to many, died Saturday, January 28, 2012 at home in Pensacola, Florida. At age 17, while living in Hawaii, John was injured in a BMX bicycle accident leaving him a quadriplegic. He fought a valiant fight to rise above his physical handicap and lived life to the fullest. After his injury he completed high school, snow sledded off a mountain in Colorado, had two tandem skydiving jumps, learned to drive a handicapped-equipped van, and completed college earning a master's degree. He was and continues to be an inspiration to others. John was a strong, caring person and a loyal friend. He fought a courageous battle for 30 years while maintaining his Christian faith. John is survived by his parents, Ralph and Gloria Lockhart; his brother, Steven Lockhart (Shelly); his nieces and nephews, Stephanie, Stuart, Jackie, and Jacob Lockhart; Charlie and Amanda Braden; his aunts and uncles, Frances Fowler (Carroll), Robert Lockhart (Lynda), Gerald Lockhart (Brenda), Sarah Taylor (Kenneth), William Lockhart (Cathy), Dallas Brooks (Linda), Brenda Blair, and Jimmy Brooks as well as numerous cousins. John's special friends and nurses for many years, Charlotte Hinds and Brian Wallace, brought comfort and joy to his life. A memorial service to celebrate John's life will be held at the Chapel on Glassy Mountain in Landrum, South Carolina on Feb. 18th at 11AM. Interment of his ashes will be held at a later date at Barancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Florida. The family wishes to thank all who offered words of encouragement, lifted them up in their prayers, and did deeds of kindness throughout John's life and after his death. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations in remembrance of John be made to Cokesbury United Methodist Church, 5725 N. 9th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32504-8920 or Covenant Hospice, 5041 N. 12th Ave., Pensacola, FL 32504-8916.
