John Michaels Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 14, 2012.

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home on November 9, 2012 at the age of 79 in College Station, Texas.
There will be a viewing on Friday, November 16 at Memorial Funeral Chapel, College Station at 5 p.m. -7 p.m. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, November 17 at 11 a.m. At Christ United Methodist Church, College Station.
Born in Newark, NJ, he was a graduate of Central High School and attended Newark College of Engineering. Jack joined the New Jersey Army National Guard at age 18 and attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before retiring in 1977. As part of his service in the 102 Armored Cavalry, he commanded a tank battalion. His civilian career at International Telephone and Telegraph extended for more than 20 years and he retired as a VP of Manufacturing in 1994. As part of his professional career, he served two terms as President of the International Management Association.
Jack always showed an outstanding and ongoing commitment to volunteerism and community. When his boys played baseball, he was an umpire and then President of the Nutley, NJ Little League. Jack was deeply involved in such organizations as Habitat for Humanity and the Stephens Ministry as well as being a certified First Responder. He loved to spend part of his summer at the Hideout in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania and could be seen bass fishing twice a day no matter what the weather. In addition, he was a knowledgeable baseball fan who followed the NY Mets from the day of their inception.
Upon his arrival in College Station, he became an instant and loyal Aggies supporter. He could often be seen at tennis matches, basketball, baseball and football games. Jack was happiest when he was spending time with his family. The entire family was in town for his and Peggy's 60th anniversary celebration this past summer and he was truly in all his glory. He is leaving behind a legacy of compassion, caring, insight, friendship and humor that will never be forgotten. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Jack is survived by the love of his life and his wife of 60 years, Peggy. He is also survived by his four children, John and wife Denise Michaels, Robert and wife Toni Michaels, Terry and husband Ed Dougherty and Nancy Siciliano; 10 grandchildren Kate and Tess Michaels, Elysia and husband Kyle Bagley, Brandon, Morgan and Brianna Michaels, Russell, John, Edward Sean Dougherty, Jennifer and husband Curtis Council; one great-grandchild Kaila Council; and his constant companion and dog, PJ.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley at 502 W. 26th street Bryan, TX 77803..
