Pleasant Ave. John, who was known as Jack, was born in the Vailsburg section of Newark on October 14, 1923. His family moved to Irvington shortly after. He attended public school in Irvington and spent summers at a bungalow his father build near Lake Cuomo in Belmar. He graduated from Irvington High in 1941 and spent one year at the Newark College of Engineering before enlisting in the Navy in October of 1942, becoming the 10,000 applicant for Naval aviation flight training since the start of World War II. Jack served in anti-submarine patrols piloting PBY Catalinas and Venturas in South America, North Africa and the Mediterranean until November 1945. After the war he attended Fordham University, where he received a B.A. in Economics. He worked as a pilot for American Airlines for a short time before joining the Hardware Mutual Insurance Co. He was recalled to active duty in November 1952 and was posted to Iceland during the Korean War, attaining the rank of second lieutenant. In 1955 he purchased a local insurance agency and renamed it the John J. Miller Agency. Jack was active in community affairs, serving as vice president of the Irvington Chamber of Commerce, vice chair of the Irvington Housing Agency, and chair of the Friends of the Irvington Library. He was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Knights of Columbus, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly as a Democrat in November of 1961. In September of 1963, he married the former Madelyn Stanton. In 1965 he was appointed clerk of the Assembly, a position he held until 1993, with the exception of 1968-1973, when he was Assistant Clerk. He was active in the Naval Reserves from 1954 until 1983, and served as Commanding Officer of the Naval Air Reserve Intelligence Unit at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, retiring with the rank of captain. In addition to the Miller Agency, he owned and operated the Philip V. Wilder Agency in Irvington, which specialized in his dual passions of boats and airplanes. Jack retired in 1993 to Bay Head, where he enjoyed cooking, fishing, reading, painting and sitting on the beach. Jack was predeceased by Madelyn, his beloved wife of 49 years, in September, as well as by his brothers William and Raymond. He is survived by his daughter Patricia and son-in-law Anthony of Alexandria, VA, son Keith and daughter-in-law Diana of Livingston, daughter Kathleen and son-in-law Frank O'Donnell of Hamilton, and grandchildren Patrick, Olivia, Sean, Grace and Colin. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Saint Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 94 Old Short Hills Rd., West Orange, NJ 07052.
