John C. Mortimer passed away on Tuesday, the 14th of January 2014, at the age of 62 . John was born on the 12th of August 1951, in Dallas, to John L. and Evelyn Fae Grimsley Mortimer. He moved to Houston at an early age. He was a resident of Missouri City at the time of his death.

John was a graduate of Lamar High School, and attended college at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, and remained active in the Alumni Association. He also attended the University of Texas, and graduated from the University of Houston.

John greatly admired his father who was an executive for US Steel and followed in his father's footsteps by entering the steel business. He began his career in 1974 at Continental Pipe & Tube, Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp., Continental Tubular Supply and Tex Tube Pipe in Houston. From there he worked with Sidermex International in San Antonio as their Sales Manager. After the closing of Sidermex, he moved to Houston to join the Maurice Pincoff Company. In 2005, John fulfilled his lifelong goal, to own his own business, and formed Houston Steel and Pipe International, Inc.

John loved life and he lived it to the fullest. Growing up he spent many fun filled summers with his family near the cold waters of the San Marcos River at Rio Vista and later, at Lago Vista on Lake Travis. He loved his friends with a passion. He loved the game of golf, and shared many good times on the golf course with friends.

He also loved music of all kinds and nothing gave him more pleasure than to hear his daughter Clare sing. He had a beautiful voice of his own and he and Clare shared many memorable times singing together.

At an early age, John became involved in politics and was an active member of the Young Republicans. John was a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, being a 4th generation Texan. He was also a member of the Houston Club, and the National Association of Steel Pipe Distributors.

John is survived by his wife, LaRue; his daughter, Clare Mortimer Jamito, and husband Jeremie of San Antonio; sister, Martha Gallien of Houston; niece, Katy Gallien of Houston; nephew, James E. Gallien III of St. Louis, Mo.; great niece, Amy Gallien of Houston; and many, many Kendrick nieces and nephews whom he called his own.

Friends are cordially invited to greet the family during a visitation from five o'clock in the afternoon until eight o'clock in the evening, Friday, the 17th of January, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

The funeral service is to be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 18th of January, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.

The interment will follow, via an escorted cortege, at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston.

"So sad to hear of John's passing. I will miss dealing with him and his friendship. God bless you Larue." Barrett Evans (San Antonio, TX)
