John was born April 14, 1923 in Pittsburg, Ks to William Hannah Philips and Hazel Eunice Jester Philips. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the African-European Theatre from 1941 to 1945. John married Mary Mildred "Mickey" VanArsdale on January 25, 1946 in Pittsburg, KS. In 1948, he graduated from Pittsburg State College with a degree in accounting. John moved to Johnson County, Kansas in the 1950's where he worked for Strongheart Dogfood as a financial controller, and later became an owner of Putsch's Restaurants until it was sold, finally retiring in the mid 1980s.

John was a member of the Kansas Prairie Dog Campers Club and the Trailblazers. He enjoyed camping and traveling, especially driving to see the country, until health issues required him to be closer to his healthcare providers. He lived independently in Olathe until the fall of 2013, when he moved into the Good Samaritan Society where he remained until his passing.

John was preceded in death by his wife Mickey, who passed away in March of 1998, his sisters, Irene Ertman and Beth Barbero, and his brother Charles Philips. He is survived by his daughter Jean (Terry) Pierce of Olathe, Ks, and son J. Michael (Beth) Philips of Farmington, NM; five grandsons, two granddaughters, and four great-grandchildren; and his sister Elinor (Robert) Tollman and family of Dunwoody, Georgia.
