Dr. John Milton Phillips, age 91, passed away Monday, November 1, 2010. John was born in New London, CT on February 10, 1919. He married Sylvia Phillips in 1945, which began a 64 year union. John began work at Hermann Hospital in 1955, and then went on to become one of the founding fathers of UT Health Science Center, teaching 3rd year Radiology residents. He was dedicated to his family evidenced by attending every school production, sporting event, and life milestone in his children's and grandchildren's lives. John's generosity knew no bounds and he was a tireless contributor to far too many charities to list. He will be greatly missed by family, friends, students, and whoever had the pleasure to know him or to be helped by him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia J. Phillips. John is survived by his sons, Michael Phillips and his wife Kathy, and Christopher Phillips; daughters, Robin Robichau and her husband Glenn, and Laura Phillips; grandchildren, Scott, Jennifer, and Kimberly Phillips, Jeff, Kelly, Keith, and Mark Robichau, Brandi and Shawn Phillips, Hannah and Madelyn Shikh-Salim; and great-grandchildren, Allison and Kamryn Robichau.

To the family of Dr. Phillips, I extend my deepest sympathy. I have lost my mother and father this year, so I understand. John was one of my favorite teachers while I was a resident and a friend after I finished my residency. He was one of the kindest people I have ever known. He was a very good radiologist and always thought of the patients first. It always brightened up my day when I came our paths crossed.

Dr. Phillips was one of my favorite faculty while working in Radiology at UTHSCH. He was ALWAYS smiling. If he ever got angry about something, I always listened. I knew there was some foundation to the problem because he never, ever complained about anything. He was one of the fairest, kindest souls I have had the pleasure of knowing. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Your Dad was a great guy -- truly an inspiration! I worked with Dr. Phillips at UTH from 1990 until his retirement, where I was the Chief Business Officer for the Department. John truly was a gentleman and a scholar, and one of the kindest people I ever met. He looked at each film that he was interpreting, knowing that there was a real person, who needed his utmost attention and focus. It was a philosophy, and an approach to Radiology, that he instilled in each Resident that he felt he had the privilege of teaching. We often joked that if we could clone Dr. Phillips that we could run the Department with half as many Radiologists as we had! John had such a wonderful work ethic and he never was too busy to help anyone, or do whatever needed to be done to take care of patients. I also remember how much John loved your family and the great joy that he took in being able to see his grandchildren play baseball. I feel blessed to have known Dr. Phillips as I think he inspired everyone he met to be a better person.
