POWERS
Fr. John Aquinas Powers, O.P., a Domincan Friar of St. Martin de Porres Province, died at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center in New Orleans, Louisiana on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at the age of 85. Born in Falmouth, MA, he entered the Dominican Order on July 25, 1945 and was ordained a priest on June 12, 1952. Father served as a chaplain to the Marines in China, Japan and Pacific Islands from 1955-1959. He served in a variety of parish and special assignments between 1960-1996 including Ohio, Michigan, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, North and South Carolina and New Orleans. In 1996, he celebrated his Golden Jubilee as a Dominican Priest. Father is survived by a sister, Mrs. John (Judith) Magnani of Falmouth, MA, and twelve nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Abigail Paige Powers and James Arthur Powers and a brother, Galen Patrick Powers.
The Office of the Dead will be prayed at Our Lady of Wisdom Chapel, 5600 Gen DeGaulle Drive, New Orleans, LA 70131 on Friday, October 22, 2010 at 7:00 P.M.
The Liturgy of Christian will be celebrated at Our Lady of Wisdom Chapel on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 9:30 A.M. Interment will follow in the Dominican Friars Cemetery, Rosaryville (near Ponchatoula), Louisiana. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Southern Dominican Province, USA, 1421 N. Causeway Blvd., Suite 200, Metairie, LA 70001. Arrangements under the direction of Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home, New Orleans, LA. Guest book may be signed on line at www.schoencanalstreet.com.
