John Henry Schoening was born on November 17, 1922. He grew up in Grand Junction, Colorado and graduated from Fruitvale High School in 1940. He joined the Army and served until 1946. After coming home from the service, he married Lillian Forstrom after she returned from the Navy. John and Lillian were married August 12, 1947. They would have been married 67 years next month. From this union, they had a daughter, Carol and son, David. They also had two granddaughters, Jennifer and Elizabeth and four great grandchildren: Cyrah, Brenden, Kobe and Gresyn. John Henry Schoening was born on November 17, 1922. He grew up in Grand Junction, Colorado and graduated from Fruitvale High School in 1940. He joined the Army and served until 1946. After coming home from the service, he married Lillian Forstrom after she returned from the Navy.

John and Lillian were married August 12, 1947. They would have been married 67 years next month. From this union, they had a daughter, Carol and son, David. They also had two granddaughters, Jennifer and Elizabeth and four great grandchildren: Cyrah, Brenden, Kobe and Gresyn.

John went to work for the Rio Grande Railroad. He worked first as a fireman and later went on to become an engineer, running freight trains and Amtrak. He was proud to work for the Rio Grande and retired in 1985.

John was a lifetime member of the Elks Club No. 575 and the Masonic Mesa Lodge No. 55. He served various positions within these clubs. He served on the board for the Rio Grande Credit Union. He was President and Local Chairman of Grand Junction Vets Club No. 4.

John and Lillian loved being together before and after retirement. They were quite the bowlers and enjoyed it for many years. They enjoyed traveling together and spent many countless hours enjoying the world with innumerable family and friends. They loved to fish and spent many hours fishing with all their grandchildren.

John was a wonderful, caring, kind hearted man who had many wonderful family and friends. He will be forever missed.

He is survived by his wife Lillian, daughter Carol (Mike). Granddaughter Jennifer (Bart); granddaughter Elizabeth; great grandchildren Cyrah, Brenden, Kobe and Gresyn and many numerous extended family. He was preceded in death by son David. Funeral services will be held Saturday, at 1:00 P.M. at Martin Mortuary in Grand Junction with military graveside services to follow at Orchard Mesa Cemetery at 2:30.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Botanical Gardens.
