I was very sorry to hear of John's passing. We worked together for a number of years. He was what every police office should strive to be, caring, courageous and honest.
I recall an occasion just before Christmas when we were assigned to interview a witness in a murder case and when we went to the young man's apartment it was very evident the young couple had very little. John asked why there was no Christmas tree for the kids. He was told that they could not afford one. John went home that afternoon and went through his attic and put together a nice assortment of lights, ornaments, and decorations. He then purchased a tree and returned to the apartment giving it all to the family. I did not see him do it but I suspect that John also gave them some cash.
John also had a mischievous sense of humor and we would often find ourselves the victim of his small practical jokes. We were lucky to have him as a friend.

In the days of spinning rosewood nightsticks, call boxes, and ice slicked night sidewalks, John routinely sought out opportunities for acts of kindness which typically benefited those he did not know and would not encounter again. His policing qualities of integrity, decency and compassion, perhaps eclipsed only by his renowned physical strength, was communicated with a sincere and almost constant smile. John Scripture--a treasured friend for many police officers, and a genuine cop's cop to many, many more is in heavenly police service now. Someday, we will be honored to partner with him again.

My condolences to John's family. John and I worked the same squad on the E. Hartford P.D. for many years. He was trusted and dependable fellow officer. Very sorry to read of his passing.
