Sharing brunch with a dozen classmates was not the ideal way to catch up on this past year, but we got in a few digs and laughs that enriched my life, and that was what Bill did best with students, colleagues and old friends. I graduated to that last status during our email years together, even though many miles separated us. I look forward to seeing you when next you come this way.

Dear Peggy,
You both enriched the lives of thousands. I know your memories of six decades together will keep you charged for years to come. Bill was always on the frontier, his favorite place. We shared that dream. Much love,

I did not know Professor Smurr well, but I admired him very much for his many contributions to academia. He was far ahead of his time to recognize the importance of comparative world civilizations as the most cohesive interpretation of human history. After retirement he continued to participate in the Department of History at CSU Stanislaus and attended many of our events to acknowledge the successes of our students and faculty alike. A life well lived and he will be missed. To his wife Peggy and his family I send my deepest condolences.

I greatly valued Bill's friendship and learning during our 20 years as colleagues and well beyond that into retirement. A pity he is no longer with us.

I always enjoyed my encounters and talks with Bill when our paths crossed at CSU Stanislaus. He was a real scholar and his students thought him a very fine teacher. My sympathy to you, Peggy, and to all in the family. Very sincerely,
