Obituary

JOHN SAMUEL SUTER, 66, of Memphis, TN passed away at his home July 3, 2014. He was a decorated Vietnam Veteran with three Purple Hearts, a proud member of the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion of the U.S. Marine Corps. John graduated from Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, TN, and studied economics at Rhodes College (formerly Southwestern) before enlisting in the Marines (where he memorized the eye chart in advance to ensure he passed the vision exam.) JOHN SAMUEL SUTER, 66, of Memphis, TN passed away at his home July 3, 2014. He was a decorated Vietnam Veteran with three Purple Hearts, a proud member of the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion of the U.S. Marine Corps. John graduated from Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, TN, and studied economics at Rhodes College (formerly Southwestern) before enlisting in the Marines (where he memorized the eye chart in advance to ensure he passed the vision exam.) While at Rhodes College, John was a standout member of the swimming and football teams. John will always be remembered for helping those less fortunate; rescuing pit bulls and countless strays and sheltering his friends in need. He was an amateur inventor proudly building a form of bedsprings designed to promote health, for a company he started called Bedtronics. In his later years John enjoyed vacationing with his family and friends on the island of Curacao. John lived life on his own terms. As one family member said, "John lived his life as he damned well pleased." He liked his Harleys big, his tequila smooth, and his fish dumb. He was preceded in death by his parents, Loyal Samuel Suter and Ruth Watson Suter. He is survived by his aunt, Ramona Watson; four sisters, Ruthanna Legg of Scotia, NY, Cindy Suter of Toronto, CAN, Pati Irish of Renton, WA, Kathy Singh of Sterling, MA; and one brother, Gary Suter of Wailuku, HI. In addition, he has seven nieces and nephews, as well as four great-nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Thursday July 10, 2014 at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel at 6 p.m. After military honors are rendered the family will receive friends from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m. also at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorials be made to Wounded Warrior Foundation at woundedwarriorproject.org.
