A private burial service with full military honors for John G. Wilmore, 67, of Harker Heights, will be Tuesday at Central Texas State Cemetery in Killeen. Mr. Wilmore died June 6, 2014, at 10:40 p.m. He was born Jan. 6, 1944 in Biloxi, Miss., to John Henry and Frances Cox Wilmore. He was in ROTC in high school as well as being active in sports. Given the nickname Atlas as a youngster, he lived up to this moniker, excelling in athletics throughout high school and his life. A private burial service with full military honors for John G. Wilmore, 67, of Harker Heights, will be Tuesday at Central Texas State Cemetery in Killeen.

Mr. Wilmore died June 6, 2014, at 10:40 p.m. He was born Jan. 6, 1944 in Biloxi, Miss., to John Henry and Frances Cox Wilmore. He was in ROTC in high school as well as being active in sports. Given the nickname Atlas as a youngster, he lived up to this moniker, excelling in athletics throughout high school and his life.

After graduating from high school, he continued on in ROTC at the University of Houston and subsequently enlisted and was commissioned in the U.S. Army at Fort Gordon, GA.

Mr. Wilmore was a decorated Army helicopter pilot and 22-year veteran serving in Vietnam, Korea and Germany as well as several assignments at Fort Hood. After retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, he remained in Harker Heights, where he perfected his golf game, earning four holes-in-one.

Mr. Wilmore was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Elizabeth Anne; and niece, Rosalie Wilmore

Survivors include his loving wife, Miriam Ostermeyer; daughter, Lisa Wilmore; siblings, Cindy Lou Wilmore, Salila Jean Travers, Thomas James Wilmore, Mary Ruth Wilmore and Jerrie Lee Wilmore; several nieces and nephews and their children; and many cousins, all of whom hold great admiration for him.

Donations in John's name may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.

Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen is in charge of arrangements.
