Obituary

John A. "Jack" Wilson, 80, passed away peacefully Friday, October 4, 2013 at the Williamsburg Hospice House after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia, four children, Lynn (Mark) Senior of North Carolina, Kathleen (Anthony) Menditto of New Jersey, Jack (Eva) of Washington, and Patrick Daniel (Deborah) of Maryland. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, his brother David (Dorothy) of Pennsylvania, sister Lois (Jack) Bicknell of New Hampshire and several nieces and nephews. John A. "Jack" Wilson, 80, passed away peacefully Friday, October 4, 2013 at the Williamsburg Hospice House after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia, four children, Lynn (Mark) Senior of North Carolina, Kathleen (Anthony) Menditto of New Jersey, Jack (Eva) of Washington, and Patrick Daniel (Deborah) of Maryland. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, his brother David (Dorothy) of Pennsylvania, sister Lois (Jack) Bicknell of New Hampshire and several nieces and nephews. Jack was a quiet man who loved his family and often remarked how much he enjoyed watching his children spend time together during holidays and vacations.

Jack was born on December 9, 1932 and grew up in North Plainfield, NJ. He was the son of the late Betty and John Wilson. In 1989 Jack retired as a project engineer with AT&T after 38 years of service and moved from New Jersey to Williamsburg, VA. His great passion throughout his life was volunteerism. Some of the more notable accomplishments and awards include serving as a medic and officer with two rescue squads; twelve years of volunteering with the Piscataway High School Marching Band; New Jersey Bell System Citizen Award; Volunteer of the Year, Chapter Chairman and Board of Directors for the local Red Cross; Responsible for the creation and organization of the Citizens Corps Council and was recognized twice by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management; Key member of the Community Emergency Response Team; Graduated the James City County Citizen Fire Academy and was responsible for the fire department rehabilitation vehicle responding to over 200 calls; Received the prestigious Governor's Volunteerism and Community Service Award in Virginia for Outstanding Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Recovery in 2009.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 8 from 2-4 PM at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg. A service will be held on Wednesday, October 9 at 2 PM at the St. Olaf Catholic Church, 104 Norge Ln., Williamsburg.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made Williamsburg Hospice House, 4445 Powhatan Parkway, Williamsburg, VA 23188.
